boy, that second picture threw me. the form and the spots on the second picture don't seem to relate to the first shot at all. are you sure this is the same plant?

Pretty sure. If you look closely at the first pic, you an see some mottling on the leaves. This plant has grown prolificly in a container on my patio but it has lost the mottling and stopped sending up those shoots. If I find out its name, I can see what it likes. I suspect it's getting too much sun.

Thanks for any help. If you can id the first pic at least, I am certain that is my plant.

It's Veltheimia. I only know Veltheimia capensis, which blooms every year in January/February

Suse, I found V capensis and V bracteata, but it seems only V bracteata has a white or pink bloom...it can also have some really varied foliage.

V bracteata is a huge plant, this is Drimiopsis maculata, http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/49519/

Mary where did you get this? Very cool looking.
I was thinking the same thing Lynn but could not remember anymore of the name than drim something. One of these days my brain may just decide to kick in.
