I had some problems with scale and later fungus on some of my outdoor pot plants. I usually just pull out the annuals after the first frost and store the pots on the east side of my house which is fairly sheltered. I'm concerned that the bugs or the fungus may overwinter in the potting soil. Should I just dump the soil and clean the pots? Can I dump it in the compost pile and hope that it will heat up enough to kill my problems (I'm planning on adding some fairly fresh horse manure to it soon). Or should a couple of freezes take care of the problem?

I'd dump the potting soil in the compost pile. You've gotten all the good out of it and will need fresh for next year for your plants to do good. The heat from the compost should take care of any problem you have.

I agree with Jim. Also, mix up a mild bleach solution and spray your pots with it. Should kill off any fungus/bacteria in the pots. You can spray them and just let them set over the winter and they should be ready to go in the spring.

Are we a tag team or what, Moon. Plants you sent me are looking good. Didn't even wilt. Course 16 straight days of rain might have contributed.

Same here Jim, but after about 30 different plants put in the ground was happy for rain. If I had to carry all those buckets the suckers would be ten toes up lol.

You know it Jim...grin...it helps that they were pretty hardy plants, but I am so glad they are doing well.

Karen, just know I was thinking of you and buckets...of course the two that went to the family plot turning up their toes was an interesting image...grin
