The meeting went well except there were only about a third of the normal audience for the lecture. Carsten Burkhardt showed pictures of gardens and people that he saw during a rapid trip showing a friend from Austrialia as much as possible. Pictures of Osti's home and gardens, Sir Peter Smithers garden and view from their house, Rivere's fields. It really made me want to go viewing in Europe. Of course Carsten is well known in european gardening and stamp circles but other than Sir Smithers garden which has been made open to the public most of the other places are by invitation only.
The dinner the night before had some very interesting dishes. Some that tasted very good sound terrible. Think sliced radish, zuccinni, carrots and other garden vegetables in a thick mustard sauce. I cheated I purchased three salads, Japanese couscous with sun dried tomatoes, curried wheat berry, and a salad of the small green French lentils along with a cheese and fruit tray. The hit of the evening I found out was from Costco called Chocolate Dream Cake. Four layers of cake with different chocolates in the filling, dark chocolate frosting, and lots of chocolate flakes. yum.
Back to the real meeting. The members dinner was followed by auction. HPS tries to limit it to 30 or so items the rest go into the dinner sales items or the next days sale.
From his own private garden and plants he has been holding for HPS Leon Pesnell donated First Arrival, Kopper Kettle, a very large Themis, Irene Tolomeo's double Yedo, and Pastelelgance. Leon and his wife also donated plants that they had received from Jackie Jansen Peach Cobbler, Breanna Irene,
Jackie Jansen donated Rare China, Jackie's Yellow, and Laventer Cream. The last are her own plants.
Henry and Karen Chotkowski of Fayetteville donated Topeka Statue and Lois' Choice
Palmiter's Garden Nursery donated Gauguin
Bob Johnson donated Greenland which made it to the sale along with a box of other plants such as Mac Grand that were available for purchase at the dinner.
Don Hollingsworth donated an unnamed but numbered 1508 peony. don reserved naming rights. Will be available for sale in four years or so. He also donated Kathy's Touch.
Adelman's donatate Sonoma Welcome and Pietertje Vriend Wagenaar.
Our speaker had arranged for a few plants to be available. Opalfeuer, Spartana, Geratal, Paeonia qiui, and Paeonia delavayi 'Kunming Green'.
Saturdays sale as stated did not have as many buyers as normal but only about a fourth of the plants were left then various donations to places arround town were made and the rest will be planted in members gardens for the next sale in two years.
The only sad note was that the Rockii from China were held up by new shipping regulations and did not make it in time. Who knew that a weight limit for 40 pounds would go in effect the day they were shipped from the grower? At 41 and a few ounces they had to go back and be reshipped. Will keep you posted on progress???
The sale had three tables of herbaceous tightly packed, two tables of Japanese tree peonies, one table of mostly specie plants with a half dozen different intersectionals. Just enough to lighten my bank account but still with some old favorites that I already have.
