First of all, I want to thank everyone for all of their thoughts and concern. DGer's are a nice bunch of folks.

Things have been very hectic and busy lately. As far as the storms, we got through in very good shape. The raised beds saved out butts. Had a little standing water in some beds but all in all things were good. Our home sits on top of a hill that drains back to our gardens and we sit on bedrock. So flooding was not a real threat. We actually had 3-4 inches of standing water in the paths between the beds which was kind of freaky. Ground just couldn't absorb any more.

When the storm started, I was in Springfield, Illinois attending the National Small Farm Conference. My wife said the skies had literally opened up and kept saying it every time I called home. I just didn't get it until I got home. I got back on a Friday. When I went to work on Monday, the rain came down in buckets. That's when it hit me that this just wasn't a normal storm. I had to drive 5 miles an hour because the rain was coming down so hard that i couldn't see 5 feet in front of me. A lot of people were affected by this. What makes it bad is that a lot of folks got flooded where there had never, ever been flooded before. And of course, people lost their lives.

Aside from the rain, the real storm in my life has been our farmers market. We had been humming along very well and boy did we hit the wall this year. A small clique of vendors formed that became increasingly troublesome. What started out as a disagreement over the sound of the music at our market turned into one of the nastiest things I have ever been involved in. I will probably post about it to get some input from all of you but right now I just want to take a break from it. We got rid of the bulk of them but things got really, really messy.

We are trialing a CSA that starts in 2 weeks. If it goes well, we will run a full one in the Spring. We only took 15 members and we filled it in one day. We also reached agreements with a local dairy to carry their milk and referred me to a customer of his that buys his milk and creates artisan cheeses and yogurts. Great stuff!. We reached a distribution agreement with him as well. I found an all natural grass fed beef farm we'll be working with. And partnership with the organic farm up north is going well. And we are about to get into the meat of negotiations regarding the railroad depot that the city wants us to convert into a retail green market.

Keep the victims down here in your thoughts and prayers. Both my brother and I suffered from Hurricane Hugo. My brother and his family lost eveything they had and he had to fly the kids to us with just the clothes on their back. So I am very sensitive to this stuff.

With our main market ending, I should be checking in more. I really missed seeing what type of trouble Jack was starting each day :-)
