I have a Bonfire that has gotten quite large and leggy this season. I had sheared back in late July/August to just control the size! It still grew back fast and is still leggy though. I am going to cut back in spring before new growth begins, but how far can I go? It has these woody looking stems even though it's supposedly herbaceous. And I don't want to injure the plant.
How do all of you that grow this plant deal with overwintering? Do you cut back in spring? In fall? How far down do you go? Mine didn't bloom this year (just planted in spring) but I definitely want it to bloom next spring. This photo was taken back in June, the plant since then has doubled in width and grown about twice as tall! But, a lot of it is those "woody" stems. I would like it to fill out better I guess. Any suggestions are much appreciated. :)
