I found these sitting beside the dumpster. LOL Wonder why someone would throw them away? My first thought, paint them and they would be great plant stands. Any other ideas? In case you can't tell, they are old ash trays.

Great find! The plant stand is a great idea!! They would also make nice bird feeders or put a plant saucer on them and use as a bird bath. Let us see the end result.

Great stands, I have one here, was used by DH many years ago when he smoked a pipe. I thought of plant stand too, will wait and see what you do with yours. Mine has a old pot belly stove between top and bottom.

But you seem to be creative and have good ideas, maybe you should go first. LOL I may just paint it to begin with and see if any other creative ideas hit me when its painted.

How's about putting a glass top on the one without the handle once you've painted it, and turning it into a table?

Another good idea, or I could cut a longer piece of glass or board and use both as a bigger table . Thanks

I love your old ashtrays. Plant stand sounds like the most likely use. They would make nice candle stands too. I use the insect repellent candles on the back porch and could see these looking great with some big candles. I am not sure a two legged table would function very well.

Would the top be large/deep enough and sturdy enough to hold a mosaic or penny covered bowling ball? I covered a bowling ball with pennies and display it in my garden on a taller stand so it ican be seen ove the flowers.

Helenchild's idea about candle holders sounds good too. If you spend a lot of time on porch or patio the inset repellent candles sound great. In fact, I can imagine them now, and my imagination doesn't work most of the time.

LOL Sami, mine doesn't work half the time either, that is why I ask all the creative people on DG.

daylily, that is a good idea. I think it would be sturdy enough, just don't know where I would get a bowling ball.
Thanks

You could take up smoking & use them for ash trays. {;0) I found one curb side, repainted & was lucky enough to find a glass ash tray at a second hand shop, a perfect fit, I sold at a garage sale for $25. they are becoming very collectible.

Wow, I must say I haven't seen any like these in a long time. Didn't think about them being collectible, but I guess everybody likes something different.

Collectible huh, mmmmmmmm maybe I should hold on to it for a while and then decide later. After DH quit smoking pipe I ended up using it for spare pins and needles when doing some hand sewing. Been sitting in the garage for 10 years now, I just keep moving it out of my way. LOL

Lucky you! I wish I could find some of those. I'd probably set them out in a garden bed as is with a saucer inside and use as bird baths and/or feeders.

The trouble with taking up smoking is any T2T profits would go up in smoke! A pack of cigarettes is around $4 I think. ;-)
I like the bird bath idea too.

Be sure and post pictures after you finished them. You can find some very pretty plates at thrift stores. I'm always looking for pretty ones for make "flowers" out of. In fact, I found a small green one that looks exactly like a flower.

Thanks, I will, I am a little slow, too many projects at once. I do have one painted, but they are at my other house at the coast, so I haven't had a chance to work on them lately.

I know just what you mean by too many projects at one time. Can't finish one before starting another. Never did learn how to organize myself. I don't remember every seeing stands like that in thrift stores or dumpsters. Found a metal chair in dumpster, very good shape and will end up out in the back yard somewhere.

wow, wow, wow...I'd LOVE to find one of those!

My father comes to visit, and he smokes. I used to have one very similar to that one, but since I had it outside, by the outdoor furniture, it rusted out the bottom of the "pan" part.

The one without the handle would be great used as any of the above mentioned projects, but one intact would bring a good price on ebay.

Especially during this time of year. So many people don't smoke, but then during the holidays, there is frequently a guest that does, and it is nice to have one of those around :0)

You may want to drill a tiny drain hole, or two to the bottom of the top portion, so they don't hold water, and rust out, like mine did

I have a couple of those too and use them as candy dishes. I'm hesitate to paint them because I believe that might wipe out any value they might have.
