If there's already a good answer to this question please direct me to it. I did some searching and couldn't scrounge up anything convincing.
I want to bring some plants in containers indoors for the winter but I'm afraid any insects in the soil may take up residence in my home. What are some good ways to kill insects that may be hiding out in the pots? Particularly, what methods/treatments are safe for use with edibles? Sevin? Garden dust?
My plan is to stick them in my basement which is relatively dim and cool, maintained at about 50-55% RH by a dehumidifier.
I spray our pots coming inside with insecticidal soap - water, a few drops of dish soap and a blop of alcohol. Then water profusely with the same mixture. we segregate them for a few days from anything else in the house.
i don't know if I'd use anything stronger on edibles, and we've never had a problem with the above method.
In addition to spraying/watering to remove pests, you need to condition plants that will not go dormant to the much lower light levels...move them to a shaded area for a few days before placing them in the basement.
