I planted strawberries this year for the first time, due to all the wildlife around here I decided to put them in beautiful decorative strawberry pots and keep them on the front porch. They grew beautifully and produced all kinds of runners and are now to big for the pots. Can I leave them in the pots until spring and then plant them outside. Should I bring them inside, or would it be a good idea to cover them with those styrafoam plant covers.
jentools, my grandfather had them instrawberry pots in the garden and he never covered them or brought them in, I am in zone 5b (as was grandpa) but his were in an area pretty much protected from all wind...I hope this helps
I love the strawberries.. I grow alpines as well - most of the alpines are in pots so I can move them when fruiting to keep the birds away from them. I put several inche of straw around the ones in the ground..I take the pots and put them in a part of the yard that gets sun but not a lot of wind and pile the better part of a bale of straw arountd the pots so the leaves are just showing. They are very resiliand and funny enough strawberries LOVE straw.. enough so the leaves are just peeking out.
one note - I would fertilize well with a good pellet fertilizer and water them before straw - berries are heavy feeders and having it under the straw keeps it from washing away..
