nice tote! When you all are making your totes, are you putting something in the bottom to keep it flat or just stitching the corners to form a bottom in the bag?

I had hubby cut a piece of plexiglass to fit, then made fabric envelope to hold it. That way it can be taken out if you want, and whole bag can be washed in case of a spill. Hoping my buddy liked it that way. LOL

Foamboard at Michaels or any other craft store costs about $2.00 a full sheet and you can make about 20 purse bottoms from one piece. I made a sleeve and put the bottom piece inside. Just take it out of the sleeve when washing...

Well, instead of quilting I've been dealing with a cluttered computer room & spare bedroom today. My goal is to get DH's computer room cleaned out & organized so that I can move my desk in there - out of the spare bedroom. I have bags of old magazines & papers to take to paper recycling and shredded lots more. Tossed the shred in the compost pile. I can now walk through both rooms without stepping over stuff in the middle of the floor. I also vacuumed sealed my summer clothes in Space bags so those piles are gone.

Of course DH is not about to help me. Unlike me, he is a pack rat (an unorganized one at that). I keep reminding him we have to downsize before we can move to FL and we might as well start now.

Threw a fall colored quilt over the couch in the FR. Put a quilt at the foot of the bed. Got a couple afghans out. Also cleaned off the futon in the spare room. Cinnamon is thrilled as that is one of his favorite napping spots on a sunny day.

Luckily I'm off tomorrow so hopefully I'll get downstairs to the sewing...

My work table has moved with me about 6 times. Company my hubby was working for was doing remodeling. He scored the door off the ladies bathroom. was perfect because it didn't have knob, had push plate, He hooked it to wall with three strong hinges, at the perfect height for me. It has legs that pivot down at each front corner. Best part...since sewing room is also our spare bedroom, it swings up and hooks to wall out of the way. It's a nice large working surface, plus at just the right height so my back doesn't get tired. every couple of years, he sands it to get off any marks and gives a light coat of varnish. A few weeks ago I bought that huge cutting mat that JoAnn's had on sale. It covers about 3/4 of the surface.

Wow, some late nite folks out there.

I'm turned the (propane) fireplace on this AM to take off the chill. Heatpumps are great in summer but don't put out much heat in cold weather. Of course, it isn't really cold yet.

Now I'm wondering if I need to consder a bottom... Guess it wouldn't hure anything.

After I finish my coffee I need to head down to the long arm and finish the quilt I loaded yesterday.

Son woke me up way to early to get the materials to finish my cabinets in the utility area. Once they are installed, we can finish up my sewing area. Happy Day! Loved reading about using the door as I had thought about doing something similar. Leave to us sewer to be creative finding solutions to problems.

Thanks for reminding me Karen. I am on the short side (5"4") but I like my cutting table higher than normal. My late hubby had but risers on the one I have now but in the move they disappeared. Making a note: need table higher. I had been toying with the idea of hanging the cutting table and now I am going to work on that for sure. Starting to sketch out the arrangement on a graph so when my son gets the wall finished I can then be ready for the next step.

Just as a reference, Marion, I am also 5'4". I just measured my work table is at 36". To compare, my dining room table is 29 1/2", working on it is hard and I get a back ache. But my work table is very comfortable. I so love my big cutting mat, another plus, I just leave it on the table when I fold it up to the wall.

I can relate. I'm 5' 10" and have custom legs on almost everything. I don't have to worry about anyone borrowing my long arm - no one else can reach the handles to "drive it".

I have one of the HUGE gridded mats. I spray glued it on my folding table then cut it with an exacto knife where the 3 pieces of table come together. That was over 5 years ago and it is still firmly attached. I did have to weight it down with bricks to get it good & flat.

that reminds me of a short-hug thought given to me. Tall people benefit most from hugging a short person, cuz they lean down and rest their arms on the shoulders of the short person. It's a very relaxing, resting feeling, I'm told. Not being tall, I can't say... lol

However I like nomal counter tops , kitchen bath etc.
Funny thing, this place here in Fl.were we now live, was built to suit italien men (families) and they must have been short. countops in baths are still shorter than normal, very annoying. never heard of such a thing. Kitchen has been remodeled by us and is ok. Also had very short DR chairs. very annoying.

Talking about heights ..think DD and SIL have the prize as far as size difference.. she's 5'3 and he's 6'7 :) Will be interesting to see how tall their new daughter grows up to be! (wasn't I sly to slip that new DGD into my chat??) She's officially 3 days old..came home yesterday and already rules the house :)

Not that I'm a proud Grandma or anything :) This is #8 for me.. Kailey is DD's 5th, DS has 1 and I also have 2 step-grandkids from DSIL.. and I'm here in Iowa with all of them (Son lives 3 hrs away)

They start in Oct and the last one is in March..6 months for 8 birthdays :) DD's first 4 are all about 13 months apart in age and then 9 years later, here's Kailey! Still have about 1/2 of the handstitching left, but have the base done, and the rest will be flying easy :-)
It's just a matter of putting things together (once the stitching is done!)

I can hardly wait until we all have our bags (over the head, or otherwise LOL)

Gosh, I lost ya'll. LOL

Qwilter, I am green with envy that you have a long arm. I had one from Gammill when I first opened my shop in 1996, but after about 5 years , everyone started wanting duvets , instead of quilted comforters. I sold it to another drapery shop, thinking I would replace it when the styles changed again. Well, all I can say is, I just miss my quilter. I love , love to stitch around those patterns. I'm trying to figure out if I can drop the feed dog on one of my Juki's and see if it will suffice for my tote. Believe me, no one wants to wait until I finish hand quilting. LOL. Any suggestions?

I couldn't stand the suspense! I had to see what the log cabin blocks would look like so I cranked out the 14 I had left this morning before work. These are blocks from a BW swap I hosted on my quilting messageboard and they turned out sooooooo exquisite! I still have several that I'll be making into another quilt. I made all the log cabin blocks and the others are the swap blocks. One of the ladies in the swap put hers together this way and I loved it so much I had to copy her :)

go right ahead :) I didn't do vines. I made a small wallhanging, or let me rephrase that, I am in the process of making (can you say ufo!?) a small wall hanging with them. It's rectangular with the middle being a black and yellow 9 patch, the pumpkins are the outer borders with 2 along the top, 2 along the bottom and 3 down each side. I made a 6 by 6 pumpkin block set on point to go in each corner. I made all the stems face out so the bottoms of the pumpkins all touch the center. It looked kinda wrong to have the 2 at the bottom turned the wrong way. I had to slightly trim up the sides of the pumpkins so they would all fit correctly but I don't think it's noticeable at all. It was like a quarter inch off each side.

I am going to a quilt show the 7th of Nov of course I will be adding to my want to finish that pile. Barb, when you make your 'vine', do you make your own bias or do you use the already made stuff? I watched someone the other night on a video making some, but she didn't say it was cut on the bias. I'm assuming it would have to be, in order to lay it in a curvy, vine-y fashion to look natural. Also, she used a bar to slide inside the tube, so when it was pressed, it would be flat with the seam centered and hidden when appliqued.

Kizmo - you can buy a spiffy bias maker at joanns. Slide the fabric in the gizmo and press it as it coms out in a perfect size piece. No nned to sew a tube, turn a tube, etc. Comes in different sizes for different widths. I love it!!!

I really liked the pumpkin one that Sondra was working on, plus I was watching a video the other nite of one with vining and leaves, just liked the movement of it. I've worked with bias tape before when sewing other things, just haven't tried making my own. This particular one used the green print fabric in the quilt to do the vines and leaves...

It's a gizmo that folds your material for you as you pull it through the gizmo. You iron it flat as it comes out of the gizmo. It makes perfect bias strips!!!! Bias strips are used for vines and other narrow pieces when doing applique... By using material that has been cut on the bias, it readily will stretch to go around curves very easily.

Need bias strips for other than applique. With the narrow strips, and a double needle, you can sew down both sides of the strip at once with the machine.

And it's a good way to cover a raw edge or where 2 pieces join for crazy quilting.

She broke her crown and not sure exactly what all happened but she was in some bad pain. Has a temp until she can go in next week for some extensive work to correct the situation. Thank goodness for pain meds tonight.

Sorry buddy.

Can't believe I mailed my tote 6 weeks ago and I'm still waiting for mine to arrive! Maybe I didn't do enough on mine; tried to do something simple but nice for those shopping trips. Guess I'll go back to watching for the mailman.

I'll be so glad to get my camera back finally this weekend so I can take a picture that shows just how beautiful mine really is. That camera phone just doesn't do it justice.

I know my buddy's tote is in the US... but that's all postal service shows on their site...
It was promised for two weeks from when we sent it, however - it didn't leave the building until late Friday (my DH took it to work to mail on Friday the 6th, so they likely didn't do anything with it until Monday the 9th). Two weeks from then is Monday the 23rd, cuz they don't count weekends...
I wish I could hurry it along, but it left my hands on the 6th.

I haven't gotten mine, either. Ah well, such is life, eh? :-)

I'm not saying this tote has anything to do with this swap, but since someone wants to see a picture of a tote, I thought I'd post a picture of a tote.

I also bought a very nice tote yesterday at Home Goods. It is the size of a tote but is insulated. Called a "picnic bag". It was less expensive than an insulated lunch bag and since I take breakfast, lunch, and snacks to work with me, I'm usually having to take 2 bags, or I have to scrounge for room in a shared fridge that usually smells like spoiled milk. Now I have 1 bag that looks much nicer than an insulated lunch box.

Life sure does get in the way of having fun sometimes...But I agree too, stop and watch some nature.

The other day, I was running ragged so did my own therapy and went for a nature ride.
LOL, Not too much too see any more except ohwah, ever notice how exceptionally beautiful bare trees are?
Their limbs, the trunks and my favorite you can see where the nests are!
On my little treck, For the first time in eons, not one but several Black Squirrels!! How cool, their coats look so much different then our average grey...Our lil grey squirrels are cute but the black one are beautiful. LOL, just my observation.

Nice Tote Quilter.
OH what a neat idea with the insulated one.

Have a great day!

Qwilter, what a wonderful rainbow! Carrying this tote will brighten any day.

I'm not bored, I am antsy but will wait because I do believe it will be soooooo worth it. I can't wait to show off my terrific tote...well, actually I already have, but I mean on here. I love telling the complimentors just where I got it.(they are so jealous)

Beatiful colours on that oh-so-beautiful tote! Very deep too!. I would just change the length of the straps. Looks like it would catch me right around the "pits" lol

Yes, smell the roses, take a "mo" and relax. I'm waiting for my tote, but I know it will be worth the wait.
This sounds sorta like the survey Dave did awhile ago about "are you a patient gardener, or not"... (something like that).
I prefer to think I'm a patient gardener. I plant small stuff that will "naturalize" into the area, and I feel it gives stronger plants. Yes of course I also plant annuals, but the perennials fill my garden year after year, with less work LOL (does that sound lazy? of course it does, cuz I'm thrifty with my time lol)

My tote just arrived and I can see why it took so long! It is beautiful and far too nice to carry groceries around! I just love all the hand work and the colors are me! Now to keep it out of the puppy's mouth (she chews on everything) and keep all for me, me, me. Thank you buddy; you done good!
