When I scan a photo to submit as a DG image, what format do I need it in?

I am really a novice and have scanned a photo but it is so slow to send, it never goes thru?

If you have patience, I will appreciate your assistance. pod

JPEG, but I think DG accepts other formats as well but I cannot find any info about it.

Do you resize the photo before sending? Maybe your scanned photo is too large to upload successfully.

What program do you use to open your photos? (Paint? Picasa? Photoshop?) You want to save your photo as a jpg file (DG also accepts gif and tif and maybe pdf? I can't find that list either.) If you make the biggest side no more than 800 pixels, the photo will upload much faster but it will still enlarge enough for everybody to see.

I use no special program to open the photos ~ just the windows operating system. I have a pictures file which I can access to send an image. I scanned the photo and sent it to the pictures file.

Now, I need to research which format it is in and the size. Sorry, I wasn't kidding I am a novice. Please bear with me... saved as a PDF file and if this is the size, 300 dpi (?).

All right ~ I got it to go to the point that I received this message
Quoted:
Your image must be in GIF, JPG, or PNG format!
The question now is, how do I a) scan in a different format or b) change this scanned photo to one of the above formats?

I don't think there's any way to convert a pdf file to a picture file format--pdf is a format that's used for text, so I think you'll probably have to re-scan. Seems like your scanner thinks that what you were scanning was a document/text and you need to make it realize that what you've got is a picture so that it'll scan it into the correct format. Unfortunately it seems like every scanner I've ever had has come with its own different software so I couldn't tell you exactly what to do to change the settings in your software to make it scan as a picture instead. If you're able to figure that part out though, chances are the default picture format will be something like jpg that will upload here no problem.

Oh, yes... png, not pdf! Sorry about that! Windows usually comes with Windows Paint already installed. Click "Start," then "All Programs," then "Accessories," then "Paint."

When Paint opens, try clicking "File" and then "From Scanner or Camera."

HOPEFULLY, then your computer will look for your scanner, and will scan your picture. The resulting picture will be in jpg format.

Click on "Image" and "Attributes" and change the biggest number to 800.

Then "File" and "Save" to your desktop (so it's easy to find later.)

Success! The Paint program was pretty straightforward. Thank you for the blow by blow steps.

I know I'll never learn all there is to know about computers... but hope I'm never too old to learn.

Thanks to all of you!

Photoshop and Illustrator will both open PDFs and then can be saved as pict, jpeg, psd, tiff or gif. I do it all the time.
