Yes to all of the above. I garden for my mental health. Better than any pill or psychiatrist. My garden absorbs my sorrows, pain and suffering and returns them to me clean and peaceful in flowers, veggies and luscious green leaves. And you and Will Rogers have pegged it correctly -- I never met a gardener I didn't like.
Another yes to all the reasons. And above all, the good humour that prevails (usually) among the gardening community. I go to a local gardening fair in spring and autumn, and the smiling faces there say it all.
Amen to all of the above. Best therepy there is and great exercise. I'm 72 and have met younger people who can't bend to pull out a weed. As long as I can pull weeds I'll be very thankful.
One of the "whys" I garden is because I love to make things prettier. If God wanted Adam to tend Eden, then taking care of plants must be a good thing! Some plants become like a pet, in a way. Whenever we've moved to another city, I would put out the few special house plants I've had for years, and it would automatically say "home." Another "why" for me is because I know that no matter how old I live to be, there will always be new things to learn in the gardening world, and new plant varieties to enjoy, and new things to try out. It's a hobby that draws every generation together, too. And how easy it is to smile in a pretty garden as you watch the creatures go about their daily habits. Heck...it's just plain old fashioned fun! (Especially when you get compliments!)
