After I pulled my garlic this summer I hung it in the garage to dry. Because I don't have any other suitable place to store it in the house for the winter (I think our cellar is too damp) I thought about keeping it hanging in the garage and cutting off a bulb as I need it and leaving the rest hanging. It gets cold in there but I think it stays above freezing. It is also dark. Does anyone have any opinions or reservations about keeping it in a garage?
my garage is a little damp.. You will probably freeze them out there come late january and february Which i don't see as a problem.. it is the thawing out part. I thought about it myself, but my garage gets damp from pulling in the snowy cars come winter. I would leave some in there but keep some indoors as well. Under the sink maybe.. I have onions inside the large pots I rarely use in the cabinet.. ( veggies are everywhere!)

Davdon, it would keep very well in a mud room or utility room and you wouldn't have to worry about freezing. If you want, you can clean it, and put it in a zipper bag in the freezer...that way you don't worry about temperature variations.
What if I put it in paper bag and put the bag in our three season porch? It's all enclosed with windows all around. It gets cold out there but stays above freezing. Maybe the only problem I see is that it gets a lot of sun during the day because it faces south. Another thought I had was to put the garlic in a small cooler and keep it in the porch. That way the sun wouldn't get to it. What do you think?
If you put it in ant container, paper or otherwise that is opaque, you only have to worry about sun shining directly on the container...a three season porch would have an area that the sun does not shine directly on, yes?
