At what temp should I bring my patio plants inside? I assume it would be before it reaches 32 degrees, but I'm wondering if I should bring them in sooner than that...
I'm in zone 9 and I leave my patio plants out year round and cover them with old blankets if temperatures are predicted to drop below @ 45º. We had frost and a couple of freezes last winter and the only things that came in were my orchids and a couple of tender perennials. But, here in my area, even when temperatures drop into the 20's and 30's, it only stays cold for a few hours ... as soon as the sun rises it begins to warm up.
Depending what type of plants you keep on your patio, they may need to come in if temp's drop below 50º. Some plants an take more cold than others. And I hear a lot of people saying they spray their plants for insects before bringing them in for the winter.
I have on my patio:
3 huge dieffenbachia. (Dumb Cane)
6 Wandering Jews
2 large Golden Pothos
1 Brasil Pothos (which I think really needs to be in a shady area indoors (??)
1 Small Palm, I don't know what it is called... It grows very slowly..My mom gave it to me.. She bought it two years ago in a 6 inch pot and it has only grown to maybe a foot tall. She was very sick during the summer and she neglected all her plants.. I brought this one home and nursed it back to health. Poor thing was so dry.
I also have a few Sweet Potato vines all over the place, both yellow and purple, but those are starting to die off anyway due to the season change. They are very pretty, so I will have to get some more in the spring.
ok al those plants you mentioned definately need to go inside once the temps starting dipping into the low 50's...I am envious of the brasil pothos though I must say...
as for the sweet potatoes (not seen a yellow one) if you dig up the tuber under the plant and store it over winter, you don't have to buy them again...if you kow how to grow regular poatoes, it's the same pretty much..just put them in a paperbag in a cool dark place...check on them to make sure the don't get mushy that's all

They are starting to become holey.. so I better start digging.
Here is the south I see lots of yellow (gold) sweet potato vines, the purple ones seems to be a bit harder to find. It must be location. Your in Illinois, right?
