| Well, here it is, mid October, and as much as I don't want to think about it, it will soon be the Holiday Season.
I feel I've made some great friends here in this forum over the past 18 months. Although I'd love to send each and everyone of you a great holiday gift, there is neither time nor $$$$$.
So, I was thinking we might do a "Secret Santa" swap. Similar to the tote bag swap. Put a limit on the $$$$ amount and stipulate that it MUST be hand/homemade.
If anyone is interested, please post here. Or if anyone has another idea of something to "swap"... I'm open to suggestion.
Rules... you think we need some rules?????
How about we start off with, each participant provides:
1) your favorite colors
2) colors/theme that would match your family/living room
3) colors/theme that would match your kitchen
4) something you "collect" (fabric is a known)
4) something you might need/like to have
And then if the item is purchased a piece of fabric needs to accompany it.
And no one is expected to spend a lot of $$$$. This is one of those "it's the thought that counts" swaps.
The deadline for mailing would be "so it would get to you buddy before/during the holidays".
So I'll be taking names thru next Friday - 23 Oct (the anniversary of my joining the Army). Sat AM I'll do the mapping, and get your Buddy info out to you next Sat.
I'll update the 1st post with all the names of who is participating. And I'll move the rules up there also.
If you are not a Dave's Member, please send me your mailing address.
Ready, Set, Go...
The participants:
1) Qwilter

| I like the concept Qwilter. I also think, since we are all either sewing or quilting, that maybe a tool or something of that nature might be a gift as well. We have come to know each other and I think that might be an option too. What do you think? |
abbisgranma (Marion) Havana, FL (Zone 8b)
October 16, 2009 08:31 AM Post #7174900
| I love that idea also and I think Barb's suggestion is a good one. I very much would like to join this one--maybe gift could be anything relating to sewing/quilting. Some neat things available that I think we/others would enjoy. ie: note cards, tools, fabric pieces. Would wrapping our "little" gift in a nice cut of fabric be considered as well as homemade? I don't mean to confuse things so will go with what is decided. |

| LOL do you think we have been in so many swaps together that we are starting to think alike on some things.
Boy, did we have some rough weather last night. Everyone and everything is okay but it was scary from about 3 until 5. Non stop thunder and lightening like you see with toronados but no warnings so I guess it was just one severe storm line passing through. |

Sorry you had such bad weather Maid M. A nor'easter passed just south of me yesterday. No I didn't get any of that snow. We are supposed to have some weather event today but so far nothing.. |

| Barb - I'll send some of this cold rain up to you and I bet it will be snow by then. A high of 43 today. Feels like 16 Dec not 16 Oct. I am NOT ready for this.
This time of year, the basement (w/out the heat on) is warmer than upstairs. So I''ll be warm sewing.
Rules... you think we need some rules?????

| Ok, I am in! Of course we all knew that when I expressed an interest LOL
1) your favorite colors --- blue (soft denim or similar color); then we have trouble . . . if it is to wear - any color but yellow . . . if it is to 'express myself' - cream and red (I'm patriotic) . . . I'm still learning who am am in a quilting sense and am still trying different combos. Would have to say that I am a more neutral person than a bright person though.
2) colors/theme that would match your family/living room --- blue, burgundy, black, or grays; horse/western
3) colors/theme that would match your kitchen --- very soft peach or orange, rust, slate blue; no theme
4) something you "collect" (fabric is a known) --- really don't collect much, maybe really old glass bottles and a very long to do list!
5) something you might need/like to have --- sewing/quilting items, have nippers but can always use needles, markers, quilters triangle,1/4 inch ruler, I'm sure there is a ton of stuff out there that I don't even know I need yet!
I'm a pretty down to earth country woman who isn't into lace and frills, although, I do love diamonds and pearls with my blue jeans and boots. LOL

Anyway, don't worry about the "number"...

| Nothing extravagant...
Hard to set a $$$ when some might be making their gift & others shopping.
And some have different situations.
Use your best judgement...
1 seam ripper would not be enough but placed ina basket with other things could be perfect. |

Make sure all of you are in the address exchange so we can find your mailing info! |

| Betty you have a good reason to mail when you can at a cheaper rate. That would also apply to anyone else mailing to/from Canada as well. I would think it prudent to mail when you can and the recipient could acknowledge by dmail that they got it but should not post here until after Thanksgiving. That's what we are doing in the tote thread and so far it's working. |

| Everyone having a good time finding goodies !!!! I stumbled across something I'll be adding to my gift quite by accident yesterday.
Found out today I'm going to have to have yet another arthoscope on my knee. This will be the 4th in 18 years. When I had the 1st one they told me I'd probably be back every 5 years or so. I've had a small tear in the meniscus for years but it was never bad enough to worry about. Now it has torn and folded over. So there is a good reason my knee has been bothering me.
I'm hoping I can put it off till Jan. Too much to do in the next couple months. I'm only out of commision for a couple days, but can't run around like a crazy woman for a month or so afterward. |

And, if you receive a package early, PLEASE let the sender know thru d-mail, but NOT the rest of us.
The hope is to keep this as much a secret as possible for as long as possible.
We will not be "sharing" with the group till all have received a package. |

| I agree with Linda. I doubt if any of us are "hard" to please. And this isn't about spending a lot of $$$$. it's about sharing the holidays with a friend.
Some suggestions:
1) sewing kits. I must have 4-5 kits around the house. I tend to use small canisters or sturdy boxes. Each has a spool of lt grey thread, pins, needles, snips, thimble. I have one of these in each area where I tend to sit and sew. So, I can just sit w/out having to gather supplies.
2) machine needles. I go through quite a few needles. I do change it with each new quilt I start. That pack of 4-5 needles can be gone in a month.
3) nice pins. I buy cheap ones for myself but nice ones (think JoAnn's 40% off coupon) for friends. Especially those with the flat heads.
4) and think outside the quilting box. Lots of us are gardeners also...
Hope this helps anyone who needed a bit of "stimulation".
And let me know if I need to get more info from your "buddy".
