I've wondered how some of us picked our Dave's names.

If you care to share, please do...

Qwilter - when I set up my hotmail account many years ago, quilter was taken. So I just changes the "u" to a "w" and so was born my alias. Over the years I've just kept it for numerous log-ons. I'm thinking it will eventually make it to my "vanity plate" after we move to FL.

I wanted to use my email name but it was taken so my daughter suggested the obvious--Abbi's granma (my first granddaughter's name-Abbigail). So I became Abbisgranma. Heavenscape started calling me Maid M so that sometimes appears in reference to me.

I some day want to have a business in machine quilting. I would sit and think of what I would call this business and came up blank or with something already thought of by another. I have worked as a phlebotomist (draw blood ) for about 26 years. One day about 2 years ago we had a very difficult patient to get blood from everyone tried and could not do it so they came to me and said could you please try. I was able to get the patient right away and when I came back to the lab of course everyone always says "did you get it and where". Anyhoo long story short one of my co workers said Cher your terrific. I said noooooo its "Cheriffic"!. No one of course understood what I meant but the name stuck and I decided that would be what I call my business someday.

Hi qwilter,
Yes I am a sewer, mainly I enjoy crewel embroidery by hand. I have also made several pieced wall quilts, and a few quilted top pillows. Occasionally I machine sew curtains and table runners and other household doo-dads.
Thank you for the welcome!

As some of you know I collect dragons. Have always loved fantasy and sci-fi and read volumes. When I first had to get a screen name Dragonlady was alread taken so I just switched it around and became Ladydragon. For some reason (lost in the dark past I can't remember anymore) I have always thoght of the number 5 as my favorite.

I have never been clever with names. The kids always had to name our animals and right now I am agonizing over naming a new puppy. Since it is pure-bred it needs an "official name" and it should start with a "B". She is a liver-colored retriever, which is a red, brown, gold comination. I'll take all suggestions.

Mine I 'borrowed' a system from my sister - I used the first 2 letters of the first names in my family - sy (Sydney), ru (Russell), ma (Martin), ni (Nichole).

I have sewed in the past by borrowing my mother's machine. I finally got tired of lugging the thing around, so I bought one of the 'beginner' ones from Walmart last month. So far, I have made basic shower curtains, a jumper for my daughter, and a pair of pajama pants for DH.

JoAnne's had a pattern sale last weekend, so I got 10 different patterns for 97 cents each . . .some clothes for me, pajamas for kids, pillows, furniture covers, . . . maybe even one for boxers for the guys . . . would have to check!

No Barb. Sadly I was kindly asked to drop Home Economics class in highschool because I was so 'challenged' on the sewing part (blush). Moo (my mom) was mortified as she made all my clothes including coats when I was a seedling and her Moo was a quilter. My GrandMoo made a quilt for every grand daughter and was working on great grand daughters before she passed.14 grand daughters and I'm not sure how many greats. Alot of my aunts on Moo's side are incredible quilters too. I just luv to visit this forum to see all the beautious things you talented folks are making and saw this thread so I thought I'd make you smile because my user name is so self-explanatory. I enjoy sewing for my grandson. Now I'm sewing for his sibling who is due in early May. I recently (last week) bought a Janome MC 11000 SE so now I "have" to learn how to quilt. I have never quilted but I went to Half-Price books yesterday and found a few good beginner books. I'm sure I'll be coming here often with very elementary questions about quilting that many of the pros here can help me with.

In addition to my new Janome I have an older Babylock Ellageo and a Babylock Imagine Serger that I couldn't do without!

I made all of my grandson's cloth diapers 5 years ago when he was born. I love to make All-in-One diapers. They have a waterproof outer layer and a wicking inner layer as well as several absorbant hidden layers. I enjoy embroidering the diapers and other baby items. I sold most of my diaper making fabric a couple of years ago. I could just kick myself because now I'm having to start over building a fabric stash!

I even made a dress for myself last week!! I rarely sew for myself and it was a lot of fun.

I'm really glad to have found this site! I'm a member of the Sewing Mamas site but I'm about 30 years older than most of their members. :)

Linda

We are all different ages here so you will fit right in. That machine (11000) is an incredible one. My dealer was showing it to me a week ago. You will have fun with it. I am mostly a quilter myself rather than sewing clothing. I have made aprons, purses and such but not clothes for at least a good 30 years or more. There is usually some kind of swap starting every month or so but with the holidays coming up that slows down a bit. Everyone is busy trying to finish up gifts and such. We do have a signature block going on. I'll try to find a link for you. A lot of the other swaps are monthly ones that started months ago with limited participants and usually go for about a year. When the year end approaches, new swaps start. We would love to have you jump in..

Meanwhile, I might attempt some place mats. I have tons a fabric and I'm sure I can find something that will work. I'm also thinking of making a flannel crib quilt with some really cute owl fabric.

One word of advice about black/white quilts Linda. All whites are not necessarily "white". Some can have a creamy or off-white cast to them that's really not noticeable until you put it up next to another white. Be sure to take them over by a sunny window if you can to see if all the whites are true. In a BW quilt, having some off those "off" whites in there will really make them stick out and look kind of sickly. You can even take a plain sheet of bright white copy paper with you shopping to hold up next to the fabrics.

Hi all - well my name came from when I was 17 (y'know... one or 2 days ago LOL)
I was/am a strong personality and my drama coach thought I was like Tallulah Bankhead, and the thought stuck!!
For those of you who don't know who Tallulah Bankhead is, she was in the movies many many many years ago.
"Tallulah Bankhead's first part in a film was in 1917 and her first stage role in 1918. After a few other minor roles in film and on stage, she went to England in 1923, where she became famous for her flamboyant personality and deep voice, and was popular in the six plays in which she appeared.
In 1939, she received awards for her work in The Little Foxes by Lillian Helman, and in 1942 she won awards for her performance in Skin of Our Teeth. Her film performance in Hitchcock's Lifeboat in 1944 won yet more awards; in 1948 she starred in Otto Preminger's A Royal Scandal and in 1948 she starred on stage in Private Lives by Noel Coward...Her last acting performance was on the television series "Batman" in 1967.

I guess I can be flamboyant, and that's why my coach said what he did... that and being a "definite" type of person LOL

It's been a long time since I posted anything in this forum or any forum on DG. Been too busy. I love to quilt & I love to raise Hosta & so I combined the 2 names to get my DG name of hostanquilts. I belong to some quilting forums and there I go by quiltsnhosta.
I used to sew a lot of my work clothes & my DDs dresses, etc., but in 1996 my DH bought a new Harley Motorcycle & I asked him about getting me a new sewing machine & he bought me a serger & a Janome MC4000. They included instructions on their use & the last class, the instructor told me I could make quilts on that machine. I said no, quilts are made by hand & she proceded to show me how to make a log cabin block. I went to the store bought a bunch of different fabric & went home & cut them up & the rest is history.
I'm not home right now, but when I do get home, I'll post a picture of the last quilt I did. It is blacks, whites & tans for the oldest DS & his wife. They have a Jack Russel Terrier & wanted thier quilt to reflex the color of his fur. It is quilted, but I don't have the binding on it yet. For some reason, I decided to do 9" block on points. I had about a dozen made when I discovered that there were a lot of block patterns for 9" blocks, so I got out the draft paper & redrew blocks to 9". It was quite an undertaking, but they are happy with the results.

yes. it is fun to see how our names evolved. I'm new to piecing and re-newed to gardening. I worked myself to death the last 10 years I worked so I never had time, then due to health reasons, I had to quit for awhile. I found DG while I was looking for anything and everything for Lady Banks Roses. then I got involved with the nuts on Mixed Seeds or Group trades...whatever the name is.
Actually, Ive fallen in love with Wintersowing too. ( i gathered more seeds today. my dining room table is missing! it looks like seed city instead)

I took a few Thimbleberries classes and project specific classes plus a couple of Block of the Month clubs...but I never ventured out into cutting a whole quilt out at a time by myself. i just followed the instructions. but I want to learn more. more.
and be better! I made purses from charm packs. and from Jelly rolls. now I want to make a quilt from one. if my 82 yr old aunt can do it...I should be able to also.

this is a good group...these ladies will be a big help to you. Welcome to DG.

Yes. do you have them? I saw some gorgeous arbors in GA...but ive not had much luck with them.

I ordered them from something Emporium. The Rose Emporium?

First I ordered them from the DG Marketplace but they froze the first winter. but htey were also very small. then last year, I decided I was going to plant a pink climber in my dad's yard in honor of my mom instead of buying flowers for the cemetary. i ordered a Lady Banks for me.

i think ive decided that East TN is too cold for them here so i'm not ging to chance it again...i'm hopping to pot it this week and keep it in the garage for the winter.
maybe i should ask someone before it do that.

nannie...you might try putting a rose cone over your plant to protect it. It works for me here in MI. Ours here look like an over sized styrofoam drinking cup and has rods to anchor it to ground. You can fill with leaves to further protect your rose.

I'm hoping to be your neighbor before too much longer. I have grands & great grands in the Knoxville area and am so tired of the winters here.

Linda, I had a LOT of growth this year but no blooms. and it totally needs to be in a new location. i got a new calendar for next year and one of the pictures is a arbor and fence covered in them! i am drooling.

siliolegma, thanks. i had roses in the south, not here. Our winters seemed to turn mild the year I move back here, 2005. then last year we had more freezing temps that lingered, but not much snow. But surely theyre mild here compared to MI.
Holler if you do move here. lol, that sounded su'thern, didn't it?

I have seen some beautiful pictures of the lady banks in bloom. They are pretty!

That's gorgeous! And in full sun, there's a shady spot. How lovely and cool that looks!
