I'm noticing that the one plant that's by itself is more open is producing more and larger fruit than the two that are planted together, which are much denser. Also, I'm concerned that I may have an undesirable critter living under the two that are planted together. So, to make the duo produce more and be a less inviting habitat for the critter, I'd like to do some pruning. What I'm thinking is to raise the bottom foliage up from the ground maybe 6 inches or so, to give some clearance for getting in under there, and then also to thin out the interior of the bushes and get rid of some of the cross branches and such.

Does this sound reasonable? And does anyone have any thoughts as to when would be the best time of year to do this?

Thanks!
