| The 12 Month Quilting Block Swap for 2009-10 has begun!
Each month will be a seperate thread so we can keep track of the blocks, colors and the results.
Remember, each participant will choose a pattern and colors for the blocks she wants for her month. Each month, except the one that is yours, you will make a quilt block (and one for yourself if you choose) in the pattern and colors designated by that months' individual. Send the block to me and I will send all 12 blocks to the person whose month it is. No embroidery since some don't have that machine option, but you can choose from a variety of patterns.
Block Specifics:
1. All fabric should be 100% cotton. Please wash all fabric before making
block.
Fabric is completely up the individual as long as it is 100% cotton.
2. Do not use any spray starch on blocks, spray sizing is OK.
3. Remove all selvages before cutting fabric for blocks
4. Block should be 12.5 x 12.5 when finished.
5. Make 1 block to send and 1 block for yourself (optional).
6. Cut off date for your mailing would be the end of the month i.e. the June
block would need to be mailed not later than June 30th.
7. Remember, after you make a quilt we would love to see your results!!
You will be signing up for the entire year, so even if you get your blocks in the early months, remember you need to stick with us for the entire year. Others are counting on you. If something happens and you will not be able to complete a month or the 12 months, please contact the hostess as soon as possible. I realize that everyone has a life outside of the swap, but please try to plan, so that things will go smoothly.

| This is one none of should have trouble finding fabric for since Christmas is much on our minds. I made an appliqued sweatshirt last night with a santa head in the middle. Boy, applique is harder than I thougt and, of course, takes twice as long to do than I would have thought. Maybe I can get my gifts done by NEXT Christmas? |

| OK, a couple hints for those who have not yest started this block...
Instead of cutting the pieces to 7/8 round up to the next inch.
Use a truely scant 1/4" seam. The blocks will all be 3 1/2" raw. Measure them & square as needed but make sure to keep the points points.
And, put the pieces in the correct placement before sewing. |

| Blocks came in from Suggins and Qwilter for the set and I love seeing the Christmas colors. I had just gotten mine out to do the Mystery Quilt and I have more bounty that I thought! So pretty that I just want to look at them and not cut them up, but I will.
I hae so many things to make before Christmas and people keeping adding to my list but not helping. I have a couple of Craft shows to go to in the area this and next weekend so we will see if I can get somethings off my list there. Back in June, making Christmas presents sounded like the way to go; in late November it seems like suicide! |

| Ain't procrastination great!!!!! I never get all the hand made things doen for Christmas. I often give pics & IOUs.
And now, with the computer room project, and vacation next week, I'm really putting the quilting on the back burner for a couple weeks - except for the hand applique that is going with me for evening entertainment.
And the rain is still coming down. Ida has developed into a Nor Easter and MD is getting soaked. |

| So far our weather is beautiful and I'm so glad for the warmer temps. Taking a puppy in and out multiple times during the day can get me chilled to the bone even with a coat. I knew housebreaking in winter was not going to be fun! I'm also not getting the time at the machine. Between watching for peeing and taking her out I am busy, busy. |

| I woke up to the sound of my cat, Nitwit the Terrible, hollering and a hollering. Went in the backyard to find him. I could hear him but couldn't see him until I looked UP on the neighbor's garage roof. He lived up to his name! he climbed their tree and must have either bailed off or fallen onto the roof (only about 4 ft) from the limb. Well, he couldnt get back onto the limb and he's too chicken to jump so I had to go get the little stinker. |

| Now I know why children should be born to TWO parents. Then you have someone to nudge and say, "get up and put the dog out" at 2:30 on a cold Micigan morning! While we are sleeping mostly through the night we still need to go out around 5:30 am or so but then I get to sleep until 8:00. Pepper chews on everything, all retrievers like something in the mouth, and she would love it to be my arm. We are putting a stop to that. Jumping is getting curbed, too. All and all I can say we are having fun. she is so cute and funny that mostly I just have to laugh at her antics.
this is her more serious look, like when I tell her she can't do something and so she sits and thinks about it, very serious like. Black Pepper is rally a hot chick! Click the image for an enlarged view.

I had to look over the instructions for this block and wanted to remind all of you that Debra is going to embrodier your name in the center. That means I want to use a fabric that will let my name be seen; not a dark floral or other heavy pattern. Pulling out some beauties now.
Note: I finished all of the towel and pot holder combinations for gifts, completed some pillow for a friend to give as a gift, and altered my DIL party dress. Yesterday I was a sewing fool!!! |

| Linda - You need to look at page 2. It tell you what you need to make the center block.
To make the center block, align a Color 4 3-1/2" square on the top left corner of your Color 5 6-1/2" square. Mark a line on the diagonal, in the direction shown and sew ON this line. Trim off the excess, and press seam allowance towards small triangle, then add another Color 4 3-1/2 " square to the opposite corner, in the same manner...

| Received blocks from Thunder, Cheryl, Marion, and Sondra. I better get on the ball! Christmas will be here before you know it!
Must tell you all a funny (NOT!) In MAy I asked my DIL for t-shirts from my two grandsons to make quilts for Christmas. Reminded her in July; August I said I really needed them by Sept. 1 and would come to Detroit and pick them up if she would tell me she had them gathered. Nothing...
When I arrived home on Sunday afternoon after Thanksgiving I found a box in my alcove with T-shirts in it. No note, nothing but I know where they came from. Can you beat that? With Christmas less than a month away she thinks I am going to have time to do two T-shirt quits. Not gonna happen. I guess the boys will be I.O.U.'s This DIL is the pits! | Well, Ladies, I DID IT! Over the holidays I went and looked at a condo at a retirement village and yesterday I bought it! I will be moving to northern Ohio sometime in March. This puts me 15 minutes from one son and 1 hr from another, which is far better than the 3 hours it is now.
This place is everything I wanted; 1800 sq. ft., two bedroom with a den and sun room so I can have a dedicated guest room and still have lots of space to spread out my sewing stuff in the den. The kitchen has a huge breakfast bar that is sit down height. When I saw it all I could say is "what a great place to lay out my quilts!".
Obviously, if I had known this was coming I wouldn't have gotten the puppy but they allow pets and I hope I can get her housebroken and under control by then.
I have moved twice during the Christmas hollidays and wont do it again. Since this place is willing to let me delay occupancy until the weather is a little better, I will. They will do all the painting for me, remove any wallpaper or borders that are there and generally make any changes in the place that I want. It does have all beige carpet and I like hard wood better, but I can live with it.
Hey, Pat, since you just went through this moving thing have any tips for me? I hate to pack!!! Glad you are all settled; know what you mean about pictures and paintings. Just not home without those personal touches. I knew things would come around for you and hubby. Your just that nice a person that things have to work out right.
Well, it's been almost 15 years since I last made a move and I was younger then, and I have been here in Lansing since 1990 so this is a big step for me.
CAN I FREAK OUT NOW? |

| of course you can! you have made a major change in your life. All for the good. I wish you much happiness and peace. The time frame gives you an opportunity to pack constructively and purge what's not going with you. When we moved I invested in big rubbermaid tubs rather than boxes and a label maker. A marker and masking tape works just as well though. The tubs stacked neatly when full and don't take up much storage when empty. Plus, I cannot stand the smell of cardboard. |

It's easy to clean out that way. Of course, now, 2 yrs later, I've got more "stuff" to clean out!!!! Heehee |

Okay Jean, set us all straight here. Mine is stored in Rubbermaid totes but they aren't sealed by any stretch of the imagination! LOL
Janice, congratulations on the new home. I don't envy you. I moved 4 years ago after being in my other home for 33 years. Talk about huge "yard sale"--actually I told all my garden circle friends what I was doing and the crafty ones came by and took care of the items I no longer wanted. I have never heard the plastic thing I always thought it was better to not have air at it all the time. Wow I just bought a ton of bins to stack on my shelves so I could see where everything is. I too have had some water issues in the past and thought I was safer with the plastic. Oh well, my DH would probably agree with Qwilter

| Heirloom quilts should NOT be stored in plastic bags, but wrapped in archieval tissue paper and rolled.
Actually, all quilts should be stored rolled & not folded. Or, if you need to fold then, get some of those water noodles (floats), wrap those in tissue paper, and fold your quilt over those. The goal is to prevent hard folds. Even if you are using a quilt stand, you should wrap the poles in a tissue paper before putting the quilt on. There are oils in wood and any metal can rust.
Now, mine I seal into those Large apace bags, but I do let the air out and re-fold at least 2X yearly.
I do believ it is those cheap plastic bags, the ones that sheets, comforters, etc come in, that get sticky & will disintegrate over time that we need to avoid using. I do think plastic totes are the best choice as they do keep dirt & water off the fabrics. |

| I have all of my seasonal things in large plastic totes and my DL came last Fall to help me go through and sort and label. So that project is done. Now I need to do the same for all the other rooms in the house. I really like the idea of packing that way. Never thought about it but I, too, hate cardboard boxes and this is the perfect solution. My new place has loads of storage and having things in containers so I can see what I have will make finding things so much easier. Wow, I do have smart friends!
Jean, any time you want to come out and help me purge and pack you just let me know. I have a room for you to stay in and I will let you pack to your hearts content. That is one job I hate!
Now that I am getting excited I am thinking I would like to move earlier than March. So much depends on how bad a winter we have.

| For the January block, do you want white on the outside, where it show black in the picture? How do you want the colors laid out? |

| Betty - all you Northeners must have blood much thicker than mine. I grew up in western PA, went to school up on Lake Erie, spent awhile in a tent in Mass in winter, and never minded cold winters. Then I spent those 7 years in HI, and by the end, anything below 60 I consider to be too cold for my liking.
I can appreciate looking out & seeing snow. I'm more appreciative when my neighbor (and the community snow blower) removes the snow from my driveway & sidewalk!!!!! And I truely appreciate that MD (south of the Mason Dixon line so the "south") closes practically everything when we get 4" of snow, so I can stay inside & look out at it. |

| Qwilter...don't mind the shovelling..have a man that plows the main driveway, much too wide and long for me to do so it's 3 decks and walkway to the basement, still about 1 hr. of shovelling...in for a break, about another 15 minutes and unless I decide to make pathway to back storage shed then I'm done..it's playtime...
You are right when you say how pretty it is...breathtaking, especially a storm IF you don't have to be out in it...
They do close schools, special events etc when it occurs..been many years since they closed an entire community, ban from being on the street unless a major reason...
So far so good this morning, it's clear, cold..would be a great day to go shopping but I'm done so it's crafting and wrapping for me... |

| Oh Betty that looks so pretty. It's pretty here too but like you said it's so darn cold. Today was the last meeting of this years block of the month. I now will have twelve blocks in two different colorways to try to decide what to do with each. One set is in taupe prints and the other is blue/green solids. Same blocks each month with two totally different looks. I'll try to get them up on my wall soon and send pictures. |

| Betty - your tree looks like the picture perfect ones they put on FB's FarmTown lol Are you sure they didn't sneak a pic to use?
I'm sitting here with a heater under my desk... brrrrrrrrr it's still -30c, and I'm cold! Thank goodness it's warming up! It was -32c earlier (-35F), and it will be 4c (-15F) on Wed for the high... I can live with that LOL
Lots of snow, but the plows have been out and we're starting to lose the ruts we had after the last big snowfall!

| Well, wouldn't you know ... December is my month and I'm the last to find the thread!
Janice your puppy is beautiful. We have a black lab, too. Like yours, she's very shiny - has been since they day we got her. They are great dogs.
Betty, your photos are always breath taking. The snow is beautiful up there - but you can keep it! LOL! I enjoy the photos but wouldn't want to live where it lasts that long. |

| I will soon have a whole new house to fill and I need to decide paint colors for each room. Right now everything is beige, beige, beige. The lady ahead of me did have some wallpaper borders up in the bedrooms and bathrooms but I think they will go. My DIL wants to decorate my guest room since she thinks she will be staying in it the most.
Of course new colors means new quilts for the beds! I still haven't done anything with either the black and white blocks or the spring florals. I am thinking of a pearl grey for the walls of my bedroom so the black and whites (with their bright colored centers) may be just the thing. The florals could make a nice garden room for quests. |

| I LOVE IT! The log cabin blocks look great. That might be just the thing for my new bedroom. The colorful centers against the black and wihte make it pop. I think, betweent he two swaps I was in, that I have enought B&W to do a queen size quilt and I already have the backing. I may wait until I get into the new house to make it. The kitchen breakfast bar is long and wide and I can just see me laying out the blocks and then the quilt. |

| yeah, the log cabin blocks I got from my EQ6 program. They are super simple. I think it took me maybe an hour and a half to piece them all using the chain method. cutting didnt take very long at all either. All my girls want this one but it's mine :) they like the backing. It's a sheet I found at Goodwill for 1.99 and it quilted up no problem at all given that it's a sheet and some don't like to be quilted. I want to find some really wild black and white zebra stripe fabric for the binding.

| What a cute backing! Perfect with your blocks. I've wondered about using sheets. When you say some don't like to be quilted what do you mean? Should I look for anything in particular that makes one quilt easier than another? |

| I look for a coarser weave. The ones that are really tight woven make it harder for the needle to punch through. It has to puncture the weave instead of pushing the threads aside. If it looks sateen I don't buy those either. Those are slippery. I buy it even if it says poly/cotton blend. I've never had a problem with a blend causing puckering or anything. I also unfold it completely to make sure the center of the sheet doesn't have nubblies or is worn away. So far I've had great luck finding really good ones at Goodwill. You'd not believe how many people donate new flat sheets. I guess they just don't use them but I sure do! plus it beats having to shell out more money for backing fabric. |

| The quilt I posted only used 9 of the Black Tie Affair blocks from the swap. I must tell you all that my mom came over and fell in love with the rest of those AND the Glutton For Punishment blocks. She's in her 80's and wanted them so I gave them to her:) I'll take a picture of the quilt she made from both sets and you are going to adore how she took these two sets of unrelated blocks and worked them into a quilt. I could have never done it! Plus, she hand stitched the whole thing. I'll post a pic tonight. She just brought it to me to put on the longarm for her. |
