In zone six, I would probably lift them for the winter and store them as a bulb or other rhizome for the winter, planting after the last frost in the Spring. You may be able to get away with mulching heavily (1 foot or more of plant material) but the results would vary depending microclimate (such as how close you are to the house) and how deeply the ground freezes.
