Thanks for a good article. Here in eastern England where the soil is alcaline, I have tried but failed with Arbutus unedo. Arbutus andrachnoides is said to be more lime tolerant, and is doing well. I'm a bit disconcerted though, to read your comment about the potential height of this plant - 30ft is a bit more than I had bargained for!
According to my expert, Michael Dirr, a fine 30' specimen exists at Bodnant Garden, Wales. He reports that the rich reddish brown branches literally grab even the most passive of passers-by.
