Hi I know nothing about bamboo but old lady says she wants a bamboo plant in the back corner of our backyard. Apparently she decided to like them all of the sudden. Can we even grow it in San Antonio? If so what type should I be looking at? Any help would be appreciated. Cheers...

There are a lot of bamboos that are hardy in zone 9. I would recommend looking for a clumping bamboo instead of a runner--with the runners you need to plant them with root barriers to prevent them from spreading too far, otherwise they can turn into a big problem. Here's a website that is a good resource--since you're in zone 9a look for bamboos that are marked as hardy at least to 20 degrees F and you should be OK (the "C" ones are clumpers and the "R" are runners) http://www.bamboosourcery.com/bamboo.cfm The company is a good one that I've ordered from before but there are other places to shop too, I just like their list since it's a good reference that tells you what type of bamboo each one is, how big it could get, and what it needs in terms of hardiness, sun/shade, etc.
