Daylilies: should you trim leaves off before winter or leave them

I should know this, but I was just wondering what is best. I am wondering if I should trim the leaves back to about 3-4 inches from the ground or leave them on till spring. And if it also applys to the daylilies I just recieved this year. Thanks for any advise. Kim
