I'm undertaking a re-landscape of the front yard and need all the help I can get. The yard has southern exposure and is currently mostly gravel. I'm going with a xeriscape/low water/low maintenance landscape in the front and I might puke if I see another lantana, oleander, or bougainvilla! Right now plants on the list include Parry's penstemmon, verbena, Blackfoot daisy, Mexican evening primrose (to fill in a very hot, dry area - hopefully isolated enough to keep it under control), Bush morning glory, Sage (Texas and Chaparral), Angelita daisy, Yellow dot, Rain lily, and various wildflowers from seed - Arroyo lupine, Mexican (or CA or AZ) poppies, Scarlet flax, and Desert bluebells.
I plan on putting out some climbing roses on the side yard walls on either side of the house too. Lady Banks was a contender for a while, but since one wall is connected to a neighboring house I think I need something a little less enthusiastic. Any suggestions for climbers?
We're probably going to be taking out the two ficus nitida that came with the house and replacing those with either Sissoo or Tipu and adding two or three smaller form trees as well. I think the only thing remaining of the original landscape will be the two dwarf oleanders - but I just might yank those too.
Sorry this is so long, this is the first time I've undertaken such a large project on my own (my husband is only providing manual labor, so the planning and purchasing is all on me - egads!). Any and all suggestions will be gratefully accepted.
