I understand that "cultivar" is a portmanteau word derived from cultivated and variety. This seems (at least in its simplest context) to be a word for a variety that is either selected or created, then maintained by cultivation.
In recent months, I've run across the term "adaptivar". By implication, this is also a portmanteu word, but derived from adapted (plus an "i" and variety. I've read that tomato plants can "adapt" to an ecological environment and others saying that this does not and/or cannot occur.
