| Last week I typed up 4 diff pages on Excel. I saved and retreived them 2x. Now when I go to open any one of them there is an automatic installation attempt of Excel reading: if you installed Excel using a cd put the cd in. If not search for the source. I tried c; but nothing. All of Office was on this pc when I purchased it new. Help! |

| Do you still have a shortcut to the Excel program somewhere on your desktop, or if you go to your Start menu (or whatever the equivalent might be in newer Windows versions) do you see Excel there? If so I'd try to open the Excel program itself, then use the File-->Open command to try and open your files. That'll tell you if the problem is that Excel itself is missing/messed up or if it's a problem with the files becoming corrupted. |

| So do you get the error message when you try to start Excel, or does it open fine and then you have trouble when you try to open those particular files?
If Excel itself has been messed up, most of the time when you buy a new PC they give you a set disks with all the software that was pre-loaded on the computer (all the PC's I've ever bought have come with those). If you don't have that, then try contacting the place you bought it or the manufacturer of the computer and see if they can get you a copy of those disks.
Also--I don't know how long you've had your computer, but if it's a fairly new purchase are you sure the computer came with Office fully installed, or was it just a trial version? It's been a couple years since the last time I was PC shopping, but most of the computers I looked at if you wanted Office you have to pay extra for it. If you don't pay extra, you'll often get a trial version of Office that would look the real thing, but then it'll stop working after the trial period is over unless you pay to keep it. |

| What version is your OS? I have not seen Start>Excel>Open in XP is why I ask. If Excel was on your Start menu, typically you would click on Excel and it would launch so I wonder if your shortcut (link) is broken.
Can you try Start>All Programs>Microsoft Office>Microsoft Office Excel?
Even if you have the trial version it should still launch and then prompt you to purchase. The trial version won't let you edit or save but will allow viewing (at least 2003 would).

| I have Office 03 and my attempt to restore is futile. Microsoft support did not help. I went back to Oct 1 and then tried Oc 15 and reads can not do. My computer is CISNET about 6 yrs old. I will have to contact the manufacturer for a re-install cd. |

| Did it come with a recovery CD or was the recovery on the hard drive? |

| If you need your files and cannot open excel you might want to download openoffice. It is free and compatable with the MS Office programs. That way you should have access to your files until you get it fixed.
Another thing you can try is to open one of your other Office programs and click on help and then repair. It "says" it will check all Office programs and fix problems. I seem to recall trying that once and it didn't help, but that was years ago and I don't recall the details of my problems. But it will probably ask you to insert your installation disc. Can't hurt to try. |

| Another thought. From "My computer" go to:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11 It may differ a bit depending on your version. There should be two links to Excel in that folder, the original and an updated one. Try both. |

| Well get this. I decided to shut the comp. down thinking if I open in safe-mode . . .
As it shut down the message read "11 updates to install. Do not shut down it will shut down when completed." POW the Excel was back! Thank you thank you all your dear DG'ers for help. Now in my attempt to open in safe-mode clicking F8 it did not open in safe mode. ??? |
