Western Hummingbirds Vol. 7,
this is a continuation linked back to here:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1041329/

There are wonderful pictures of these jewels in flight in the past threads,
great to explore and grateful for their activity.

This Anna male ruled the arbor and allowed me to get almost underneath him
as he searched the skies for his conquests, his adversaries, his kin and
his passion (ok sounds like a cheap romance novel)
I wasn't any concern for him, most times he lifts himself and circles till I pass.
I have two feeders up and I think he is keeping an eye out on both of them from
this vantage point.

edit-bad grammar, what's new.
. edit-bad spelling, I misspelled 'grammer' LOL.
now that's funny.

Anna female on her perch on the pine.
Its cold and rainy now, better bundle up.
Can't help to think of the young birds who
haven't gone through the winter what they
may be thinking since this summer was one
of the driest and warm in recent time.
I know the regular bird feeder was very
active today.

Thank you Meickle,
We have these Anna's year round. At times I think some
'know' us and are use to us being around. They are
curious and will investigate to their satisfaction.
This female has been around for a couple of years,
she has the white plume on the side and likes that pine tree.
Never saw a nest but only half-heartedly looked.

My photography skills and equipment can't hold a
candle to Duc's and several others who post here,
hopefullly I'll be lucky to get some better shots.

Great start on this new thread dirt! I know exactly what you mean about your first male "ruler". I have one here too and he's managed to keep his feeder to himself since early spring. That mean "look" they have would scare off any young or old bird.

This young man is sure growing up and getting lots of color.

Hi Duc, you know, I haven't seen the old fella
for a long time.
In fact not since the rufous departed.
I know this is young but he's
the one right now that dominates. Maybe I'm
just a minor part of the old guys 'kingdom'--
there may be other places nearby that have finer
habitats and environment. Lots of people feed these guys.

This year the folks from the large high tower
power line that goes over most of this property
cut down almost every tree under it, unlike before
where you were allowed a few and shorter. They
said in the next year or two they will turn up the juice and
deliver higher volts-- which I thought they had max-ed.
I know this disrupted birds and wildlife and did some work early
in the summer and just a few weeks ago when I was gone and
again when they decided to take out 3 big cedar stands here
and a tall fir next door last week.
I'll keep an eye out for the brightly lit full mature guys--
to this ones credit-- he does have a raspy loud call,
more so than the really young ones who are tinny and
high pitch. He's the one that ignores me and maybe the mature guy
stays clear but naw, I would be able to see hisfull red flash and recognize a mature one.
Interesting though, nice observation.
Nice pic of waiting your turn and I'll try a flash setting--never did-- you probably
have those 'hollywood' types that don't mind that-(grin)- I didn't want to disrupt their
routine.
Have a great day.

a_Cat-- looks hunkered down dreaming about the good times.

Hi Judith Anne, Welcome to this little corner of birdland at Dave's.
Just a thought, my cousin tries to attract hummers to her place
by putting a bright red table spread on her picnic table and thinks
that helps the always inquisitive birds to check it out and hopefully
the feeder. This is for rufous but should work
for all. She has had more hummers after doing that.
I have red plates on my regular feeder for the same purpose and
know a stranger shows up when the hummingbird buzzes them and
not their feeders not that far away.

Duc-- I think I figured out some of the mystery
of the 'young' master.
In the last thread around Oct 21 I wrote that
2 males were really engaged with each other
almost all day.
I had the camera out and snapped my usual
set of real bad pics and went back to look
and sure enough there on the clothes line
was the old man-- apparently beat out by
this younger rival.
Apparently it was changing of the guard
around here, or else another bout is in the
works.

As much as this male sits and rules on the arbor
and this wire overlooking a flower garden,
the old man usually was sitting up higher up the hill
on a tall lilac tree that was cut down and a green plum
further down. My camera doesn't have the range to get
good shots (tried but lousy pics, manual focus is too slow)
but was use to him calling from there and
you watch great aerial displays as he swooped down
to the flower garden and how they can see their kind
from that distance is remarkable. Its 80-100 feet away-
I was use to seeing him even further in the berry patch
and marsh area when the rufous dominated.

was this female looking like she was

She sneaked out after the 2nd aerial display
as he went to one of the feeders to fuel up.

Great shots Duc

This little female was after the last of the bean's flowering.
They were in there most of the summer. Got to get me red-flowering beans
like I saw in the contest photos-- don't know much about them.
Up the fence is the last of the hollyhocks, things are winding down as the
nights are long and colder. Was a great season for them and hope they aren't too
spoiled. Huckleberries and soapwort are blooming and mahonia is almost ready to give them
more flower power: sage. hyssop and salvia are thin and cape fuchsia declining. Time to be
cooking up that sugar water and designing a better hummingbird warmer than last year.
Great days all.

G'Morning Duc, Thanks Pelle

Not sure but thinking shading may give her a rufous appearance--
(maybe its the season's hot look)
I'll keep an eye out, there's three males playing DOMINATION now,
the fully mature guy sneaks in the feeder at the window when the
other two are haymaking, gets on the arbor and promptly scooted.

Off-topic-- deer. Reading about one of Robert Kourik's book got
me to his web site and in the middle of this page he talks of a
deer resistant fence and garden that just looking at the photograph
gives you an idea what he is presenting and may be helpful. Think he
is NoCal.

Wow, Dirt, love that last photo of all the blooms! you did a great job with the flash on your babies. Love the yoga moves and posing too! Just one last hollyhock blooming? I still have several that the hummers are enjoying. Looks like you have plenty of choices in other blooms to keep them occupied.

its on only me and him and even the
chickadees aren't around.
I mimic its clicks (baaadly)

calls and calls,

meanwhile this is a better hummingbird feeder warmer--
http://www.waynesthisandthat.com/hummingbirds.htm#warmer
I don't have that style of feeder, he makes sense why he chooses this type,
maybe go out and get one or do something similar.
Last year I wrapped aluminum foil over an old desk lamp and spent alot time
binding the two together and making sure I didn't electrocute me or the birds.

changed that so planning again for that to occur. If it doesn't

My crocosmia, beards tongue and hot lips sage are currently limping along with some bloom time left because they are sheltered under the patio, My bird baths were frozen 2 mornings in a row. One of the hummers landed on the back of our little yorkie... it was so very cute but I was not fast enough with the camera as he was giving him heck for standing near HIS feeders !!! lol lol lol Still have probably 5 or 6 hummers hangin out. I am filling feeders more regularly though. We have not had a really hard frost yet. Thankyou Dahlia and Duc and everyone, Wasn't Duc's hummingbird pic incredible!
All the pictures were wonderful, everyone gets applause.
Speaking of that contest --
OK Duc just between you and me, what did you have to do to get those cute little fawns to
play the parts like in Walt Disney's Bambi to get 3rd? in Wildlife?
That elk I photographed, I had to promise a lifetime membership to
Lodge 2524, you know its the Forks, WA Elks Lodge just to lay still
and not get up and gorge us only 25 feet away. And he did, just chewed a
little and we got some pics and moved away ecstatic and observed from a safer
distance. In the park there were warning signs posted of elk attacks guarding
territory and herd. It was very cool.

Pic: Attentive listener, I was story telling, again. I liked the purplish patch on his head-- I don't think its a camera glitch.
PS the sweet tooth was a Black Capped Chickadee and Resin said they do that- made a believer outta me
after the second and fourth time. So help me if they start looping like crazy and hover I am going to start wearing a helmet.

Your hummer is cute. I'm seeing that purple and even have photos of dots of blue on one. No idea where all the colors come from.

Hi Vg, Hopefully you will get noticed, when weather gets real bad, they
hunker down and its been so stormy. And if not this winter, hopefully they
notice your pretty inviting flowers in early spring and then the feeder and they will connect.
Did your friend have the feeder up all year and have them around to see them
now? Have a great day and happy that you give them
support (feeders) when they need them.
