I learned the same thing from my Nana. Shake em off & bag em.
The old ways are the best ways. It must be right because I'm almost 70 myself.
Our garage (in zone 6) stays pretty even at 40o F. It seems to be just right.
Dusty Miller works that way also. I have a large square pot of dusty miller and geraniums that I just bring in and let gradually dry off.
In the spring, I just bring it back out, freshen the soil and feed a little and it comes back just right. Same pot for 5 years.
Sometimes the dusty miller bolts but I just cut it way back and it's fine.
