I'm confused a bit. I have never heard of such a thing for a flower. Sounds like 'bare root' storage of shrubs and trees. Also, I would never throw away a Geranium. I bring them in the house and continue to enjoy the scent and beauty...as they continue to bloom if kept in the sun.
I don't' have a place to keep bulbs or roots that need that perfect temperature to overwinter, otherwise I would try your method, too.

I do something similar to Frostette. I have had geraniums in a planter for at least 5 years. I bring them in, planter and all, and put them in a sunny window over the winter. They continue to bloom and really look heathier than they do outside.

I have just read this article.

Outside (at the moment) I have a small trough containing a dark red regal Pelargonium and an upright fuchsia Blackie. The Pelargonium has ceased to bloom but the Fuchsia is still blooming and still in bud as well. I deadhead all my Fuchsias and this year I am bringing all of them indoors, geraniums too. We shall see how they fare in a temperature of around 70 degrees F. Here I should add that I live in the UK in what I believe is Zone 9. It is close to the coast in Lincolnshire and next to the Grainthorpe Fen. My home is sheltered housing with no garden so all the plants are in containers and baskets. I am looking for a property to rent with an enclosed garden as I have an assistance dog and an elderly house cat. She knows better than to dig the soil out of the plants. At the moment I have three scheffleras, two cactus (one a ferocactus, the other a notocactus magnificus, two different haworthias (one in bloom), an unusual type of aloe, christmas cactus, and an escheveria. Others will come in tomorrow.

I will put a photo up of the first indoor garden I ever made, see what you think of it (otherwise it will be a photo of some other plants I have.)

Best wishes, Lorraine
