Ladybeetle asked the reason for storing geraniums upside down. Perhaps some folks could try storing some additional plants right side up and letting us know the difference, if any. Perhaps upside down inhibits sprouting or is simply more convenient in certain circumstances.
As to why geraniums are particularly amenable to this type of storage, a clue can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelargonium with the statement "Species of Pelargonium (garden geraniums) are indigenous to Southern Africa and are drought and heat tolerant, and can tolerate only minor frosts." Another tip-off is to be found in the fleshy, succulent stems.
This brings up another confusion, botanically we have been talking about cultivars of Pelargonium, commonly referred to as "geraniums". The true Geranium is a different genus and itself includes many common garden grown plants.
