You can also dig up geraniums and pot up to half a dozen in large (8 - 9") pots. Make sure you label varieties if you want to keep them separate. Place in a fairly bright spot in a spare room or garage that does not freeze. Water them only on holidays - Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. In early spring (zone 5), pot them individually into four inch pots and cut back close to the ground. From there, treat as normal seed grown plants until you can put them outside. You can also root what has been trimmed to increase the number of total plants.

Here in Zone 8, I keep my geraniums outdoors through the winter in a small alcove adjacent to my den patio doors. I cover the opening, usually by Thanksgiving, with clear polypropelene. It's a cheerful site to look out the doors and see them blooming with trailing violets and ferns during our drab rainy winters. Thanks for the preservation technique -- I suppose I could use it as well?

I have kept my geraniums for three years now, in their pots, down in thebasement, they flower for me with al the other flowers.. this past spring I did forget about three little plants out front, but had covered the flower bed up with about two and a half foot of leaves ( like I always do) and when I pulled the leaves off in may, I had geraniums already blooming there. I am going to try the hang up method on some new geraniums I found this summer.
