My son-in-law wants me to reproduce a jean vest that he has had for 20 years. It is frayed and worn thin. He has looked at the new ones but does not like the style of them. I need to know if anyone has seen one of the button and rivet tools before. I have used an eyelet tool before but cannot find it and dont know if that would work or not. Here is a pic of the vest. anyone ever made one of these before?

Here is a close up of one of the rivets. I guess that is what you would call it. I am really not sure. They go on each of the corners of the pockets.

I used to make overalls and jeans for my little guys, using similar to this from Joanns:

http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat3675&PRODID=...

I haven't looked lately, but the listing for the above states it has the little tool included in the package. You would use a hammer to set the front and back pieces together. It took me a couple of 'oops' to get it right, so it was secure, but after that, I didn't have a problem with them. Of course, that was in mid '70s.. I used them on corduroy and denim.
I would find a pattern that is close to the original, then modify the pockets and such to match. The original was probably slightly bigger when new and has shrunk over the years of washing. Other option would be to take the original apart, use that for a pattern (cut slightly bigger for seams). Depends on how sew-savvy you are. A pattern would have instructions, in case you haven't made many vests before. I have made men's and boy's vests with linings, not that hard. But yours is not lined, the seams look like flat-felled seams and facings for the front and around the bottom.
I bet you could locate a Western pattern that would be similar or even nicer to make it easier. I did a search for men's western vest patterns and came up with quite a few. Hope some of this helps!

Thanks Kathy. That is the kit I am looking for. So you just use a hammer. That is great. The seams are flat -felled seams. It does not look too complicated to make. The only problem I might have is trying to get over all those thickness. I am having a little trouble with my bobbin winder. My machine is an old Pfaff but I really love it. I am thinking about checking on that bobbin winder but am not sure it will take my bobbins. It did say it would not take a Pfaff Creative Vision bobbin but I think that is the embroidary machine. I took it not too long ago to a man that works on my machine and he fixed it but it is doing the same thing again and it he charged me $60 to fix it. I am going to call him again and see if he will fix it again but not charge me for it since it is doing the same thing. I still would like to have the bobbin winder to save the wear and tear on my machine.

Did you have problems with sewing over a lot of thickness?

I just take my time and go slow over those seams. I do tend to trim some of the thickness out if I can, makes it easier.. I have an old Coronado sewing machine that came from a Gambles hardware store in my hometown in 1972... My ex bought it for me, was my first christmas present before we got married. Just a simple machine, zigzag and some dec. stitches and 4 step buttonholer, but man, has that thing seen alot of sewing over the years! I've just it for upholstery, naugehyde (?) for our boat seats, clothes, whatever.. still going and going. Starting to slip a little sometimes, but that's what happens when we get older, eh? LOL
I bought one of those portable bobbin winders, my bobbins are just normal bobbins with the holes, works just as well as my machine, so I don't have to re-thread. But when I do, I fill up every empty one I can find, hate to stop in the middle of something and start again!
Make sure you use the correct size needle for sewing with denims, it makes a big difference! Good luck on the vest, be sure to post a pic when you get it finished!

Thanks Kathy for the advice. I did pick up a bobin winder yesterday and got me some needles for sewing denim. I am going to start on it tomorrow. I have not tried the bobbin winder yet but did try it out in the store to make sure my bobbin would work on it. They had one on the counter to try and I had brought along one of my bobbins to make sure it would work and it did so will do like you said and wind a few bobbins up on it.

Will post a picture of it when I finish

I'll be waiting... have you decided to get a pattern or are you taking the original apart? They sell the yellow/gold thread made especially to match the type on jeans that you buy... forgot to add that in last post.

Kathy I decided to take the orginal one apart and go from there.  I forgot to pick some of the yellow gold thread up when I was at the fabric store and will have to go back tomorrow on my way to pick up my grandson.  We dont live close to a fabric store so dont get to go there often so try to get to it when I go into town.Sami

Finished at last. I had some problems with the thread. It is just too heavy for my Pfaff. I never could get the tension right on the bottom. I am going to make a black one for my son-in-law for christmas and will not use the jean thread. I am going to see how the embroidary thread will work for top stitching. It is strong and I have found the same color as the jean thread. I had problems with the button holes too. The buttons on the front was close to the top stitching and when it got near the top stitching it wanted to stop because it got a little thick there. I hope he will be pleased with it. I did not change a thing in it so it is identical to the one he had. It is not as soft as his but with a few washings it will soften up, after all the old one was 20 years old. The rivets and buttons were easy to put on and I did find a rivet tool. That is a must with these rivets. The tool was only $3.79 so I did not mind that.

Sami, that is one very nice vest!! Stitching looks great! After a few washings, it will feel just like his old one. I was shopping yesterday, seen the rivel tools in the fabric shop, and wondered whether you had found one or not. Was going to send you a note to check, but you've already finished the entire thing! A black one will look really nice, saw on once with red stitching and some embroidery stitching on the pockets, really sharp!
You should be proud of yourself, you did a very good job!

Thanks BarefootT and Kizmo. I am going to give myself a little break here and wait a few days before I start on the black one. That is going to be for Chrismas anyway so have a few weeks to finish that one.

I have got a lot of projects started and need to finish them too. Got my sewing room all organized and really enjoyingf working in here now. Everything is so handy and I can find everything now when before I would have to hunt and dig for it. Feels great I actually enjoy playing in here now. LOL

Oh do I remember that con so well. That was a laugh on me because you can sew a lot better than me. If you come back and visit me I will make you one too. LOL. Nicolas did love the vest. I took it to him today when I picked up Remy for the weekend. He was wearing it at the studio today. He fit him perfect.

Well I guess my SIL was happy with the vest because today he said he would be happy with a brown and black cordaroy and a tweed one. I guess you know what his Christmas will be LOL. He is really hard to get for Christmas so my problem is solved.

how about adding some 'piping' strips of dark brown microsuede on that brown corduroy vest? across the top of the pockets, maybe? would resemble leather...

Might think about that Kizmo. Have not got the fabric yet and will check out what they have. I wish I didnt live so far from the fabric store. I try to go by there when I have to go into town. It takes me at least 45 minutes depending on the trafic just to get there. Well you have to live with the good and the bad when you live in the country. I do love it here except when I have to drive a long distance to get to anything.
