I found this caterpillar outside today, not on a plant, but sitting on a sponge I use to clean out the chicken's waterer! It's main color is brown with light tan "stripes". It is banded, smooth skinned with dark brown/tanned spots and a brown "horn." When open, it measures around 2" long. I did some searching on the internet and from what I found it might be a sphinx moth but I'd like to know for sure for my records. Thanks!

This is indeed a sphinx moth caterpillar; possibly that of the pink-spotted hawkmoth, Agrius cingulata - see http://tinyurl.com/ygtme7b

Wow, great link with photos, thanks so much for the reply. It does have a burgundy/pink tone to its skin and now I know which end is which!
