A friend made a DVD and I would like a copy of it. Can I put in the DVD and just right click and copy it to another DVD?

Is it a data DVD, or a movie? If it is a data DVD, then yes, you can just transfer the information. If it's a video, then it's a bit more complicated than that.

It is a video that a teacher gave a student to take home and copy if he wished. I think I figured out that I can watch DVD's and I can make DVD's but I dont' have the software to copy a DVD.
I have Roxio but it is for CD's

Another question then if I might pick your brain a bit Marylyn.

If I wanted to purchase a new hardware system that could copy CD's and DVD's what would I be looking for in laymans terms.
Would I be asking the sales clerk for a dual CD/DVD drive component?

Many older computer systems only have the cd-burner setup.
I think all or nearly all new computer systems nowadayas come with a dvd player.
But, not all come with a dvd recorder (burner). Its the same drive for all now usually.
Yeah, it is the dual cd/dvd drive. The dvd recorder is nice. Backing up photos or programs on dvds is nice,
dvds hold a ton. Unless one is dealing with a custom computer (where everything is optional) a cd recorder (burner) is standard anymore.
I'd just be sure a new system has the dvd recorder. Even my cheapo laptop came with a dvd recorder and the total on it mail-order was under $600.

I have the DVD recorder on mine and can create and burn DVDs but do not have a program to copy a DVD to a DVD?

A DVD recorder will also record CDs, so just ask for a DVD recorder (they don't call them "dual" anymore.) "Ripping" (getting a DVD onto your computer) and then "burning" it onto another DVD will require special software. There are free programs for CDs, but I don't know of one for DVDs. I will ask my dh and get back to you.

I guess what I am looking to do is purchase an External DVD/CD rewrite that comes with a program included which I can connect via USB to a laptop or desktop computer that will then copy a DVD to a DVD? Does that make sense. A friend suggested an LG External Super Multi DVD Rewitter with 20x DVD+/-R Write Speed 8.5 GB double layer? But I cannot find that online.
What I want to do is use a USB to connect an external drive to a desktop/laptop that will copy and burn a DVD and one that includes the program to do that such as NERO?
Any suggestions.

And a budget under $100?

If you already have a DVD burner, and just need the software, why would you purchase another piece of hardware just for it's software?

Oh sorry to confuse you. I'm a blonde :-)
The hardware/software is for another computer.

I wanted to copy a DVD for a friend and was not able to on my home computer - I guess if I want to do that I need to purchase just the software. I can make a DVD with Windows Movie Maker and burn it on my home computer but cannot do the copy DVD to DVD w/o the software.

I guess I did confuse everyone and am sorry.

When I got to work the next day we were discussing DVD and we have the need to copy DVD's at work and don't have the hardward nor software. So we were wondering what to purchase. That is when I suggested an external drive that would USB connect to our desktop and/or laptop and was looking for one that includes the software such as NERO or something.

Hope that clears it up. I started on one subject and jumped to the other on you and I apologize.
