This little barred rock is about 3 months old. My daughter has taken a likeing to it but we arn't for sure what it is and we don't want to keep anymore roos. What do you guys think? Hen or roo or just too early to tell.

I am pretty sure it is a pullet...the roos tend to be much lighter. Barred and cuckoo colouration are two of the best for chick sexing--the females tend to be much darker with "tight" well defined head spots and darker legs. You might want to post a picture of its legs--the males tend to have whitish legs while the pullets have either dark or lighter with a sort of dark "wash" over the top.

And your chicken's comb looks pretty pullety to me too...although some roos are late bloomers.

I'm rootin' for a pullet.

We are hoping female. The only thing is, it is not full barred rock. The roo was a barred rock mix, hen barred rock, so it has a lot of barred rock but some of something else too. Not sure if that will make a difference in the coloring. The tail has some really long feathers which made me think possibly male.

I've had two suspected "roosters" due to long tail feathers--but that was before their juvenile molt at 4 months...They really looked like they had sickle feathers--but both molted out those tails and turned out to be pullets...so I wouldn't worry too much about long tail feathers before they molt and get their adult plumage.

Wouldn't it have waddles by now if it were a rooster? I vote pullet too.

Yeah, that is one thing it doesn't have yet is waddles. So hopefully it's not a late bloomer. It acts very henish though.

Only a fool would disagree with all you ladies, but!!! I truly would put my money on a pullet also. Boy not often do we get a hundred percent around here.

Hey Smedge I have a question for you? Is there not a resort area up there called lake conroe resorts? I'm sure there is! In 1985 I owned a piece of property on Lake Conroe. I'm sure I have the right place. I think it is about fifty miles north of Houston? I used to live in Baytown. Just curious. Haystack

Yeah Haystack I think there is a resort of some sort on the lake. Not sure what it's called, it may be lake conroe resorts. they have built a lot of stuff around the lake in recent years and a lot of housing developments have sprung up.
