| Thanks to everyone for the wonderful shots in the last thread! If you would like a look back here is the link: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1050927/
This shot of a Peregrine Falcon was taken in September at the Brigantine National Wildlife Reserve. We were lucky to get a couple of shots as he was up on an observation tower about to eat some freshly caught lunch. He finally became too nervous with us around and another approaching car and flew off. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Nice shots of the Peregrine Falcon and Belted Kingfisher, pelle. I particularly like the falcon.
I went to Bombay Hook, Ocean City area and Blackwater Wildlife Refuge last weekend. It was somewhat disappointing. Lots of Snow Geese (10,000 est.) off in the distance at Bombay Hook. I did see the American Avocets again along with a few other shorebirds. The only birds I saw at Ocean city were Gulls and one Ruddy Turnstone. We saw a few Bald Eagles at Blackwater, a flock of Northern Pintails and out of camera range, I did see a Hudsonian Godwit. The eagles look like they are pairing up already.
Here is a photo of the Snow Geese against the blue sky and brown vegetation. Click the image for an enlarged view.

Nanny, I've been enjoying some live footage of Blue Jays taking peanuts. They are fabulous birds. I love the sound they make.
Beautiful hawk, flowerjen.
What a fabulous photo, Linth.
I'm continuing to practice flight shots whenever the opportunity arises. Yesterday at the Osprey nest I got one dodgy and one less dodgy photo of a Rainbow Bee-eater in flight. This is the less dodgy one. Caught with wings momentarily folded, making it look like a colourful missile. Click the image for an enlarged view.

Margaret, The Bee-eater is gorgeous and you did a great job w/ the flight shots! It is so much harder to get a single smaller bird in flight.
Lily, Nice job on the Heron!
Speaking of the Canada Goose, do you know they are Not named after the country but after a man named John Canada? Also depending on who you talk to there are up to 11 species of Canada Geese.

Sorry, that's a myth; Canada Goose is named after the country. Nothing unusual in its being 'Canada Goose' rather than 'Canadian Goose', that's a common form of name construction in birds, plants, etc. - Norway Spruce, Norway Maple, Turkey Oak, Kentucky Warbler, Canada Warbler, California Gull, etc., etc.

The ones of the GB Heron were snapped from about 25 ft away, maybe more (the bunch of Canada Geese in the flooded area was my most distant shot (I wish I had thought to take my range finder.). I was using a Canon IS USM 70-300mm lens with a Tamron 1.4x teleconverter between it and the 40D.

| Thanks, LOL ... I am the world's worst photographer but every once in awhile I get a decent picture.
The Sandhill Cranes let me get so close ... I stopped when I got within a foot or two because they are so large and I didn't want to encroach too much into their space and take a chance on getting snapped at but they sure didn't seem frightened by my presence at all. The location was at a friends home on the river. We see them all the time when we visit our friends at their townhouse complex. There's a sand/shell pathway that meanders around through the complex and along a lake and the river. These two would walk a little ways, stop and preen a bit, then walk a little farther and stop and preen some more. One walked up to someone's window and stood there for the longest time looking at it's reflection in the window!
This one I thought was really funny looking ... it had it's neck stretched around preening it's back, and looks to be posing for the camera. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Thx crazybirdlady51 the Junco's are now eating from underneath the feeder here, which is what I was hoping for. The last shot look's like it may be a White-crowned Sparrow. |

| I am loving all of these bird photo's ... especially the ones of birds I don't see in my area!
Bluejays are very common here in Florida and one of my favorite backyard birds. We had lots of nests this past spring and early summer. There were baby jays hopping from branch to branch in the trees waiting to be fed, but this one was shy and didn't venture too far from the nest for awhile. It was fun watching the adults feeding all the babies. One day I counted 14 baby jays in this tree!

| I may have shown this photo before and if so, I apologize. This picture was taken last year when we had Red-bellied babies. This baby would cling to the side of a Norfolk Island Pine tree waiting for papa to feed it. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Yes, it was really fun to watch so many babies and they were quite loud when the adults came to feed them! It was strange this year, we had a few Blue Jay nests in trees in our backyard and the neighbor behind us had a few Northern Cardinals nesting in her yard. The tree that is right in front of the one the baby jay is in is an old Camphor Tree and a pair of Downy Woodpeckers chipped out a nest hole and raised at least one baby this past spring. The female didn't seem to mind my presence in the yard and around the tree but the male got very agitated whenever I was out in the yard near that tree when he was around. I have a couple of pictures of the male Downy at the feeder and one of the female at the entrance to the nest cavity.
This is the male Downy at the feeder Click the image for an enlarged view.

LOL, they are both "unique" in their own way ... maybe they want to dress the way they want to, and not conform to how others think they should dress? |

| Hey Nanny ... I tried to shoo what seemed like hundreds of them out of my yard yesterday .. maybe they all flew to Indiana? They are interesting and pretty birds in their own right but they sure do make a racket and scare off a lot of the littler birdies! |

Love the WT sparrows...I think they should be named Yellow-lored Sparrows.
