Ladies thank you to each and every one for your help. This the almost finished project practicing: Rotary Cutting on self healing board - ouch - learning to use the ruler properly in adjusting the size of each and every goose. That scant 1/4", never knew headaches until that s 1/4". Learned on my own to leave extra fabric on the sides as well as batting. Machine quilting with the walking foot...Fun! thanks Helene

Great job, Helene! Love the colors and the little pleats around the edge... This is going to look very nice on your table, I don't think you'll have a problem doing your quilt!

Thank you Sondra and thanks for your help.
On your pumpkin quilt - I realize- you finished it. You should have brought the wheat (black and yellow) into the corners, I tried it in Paint and it was quite nice. HD

Thank you Kathy for your help toward that result. The applique and pleats are ruching method (rooshing).

The fabric I bought in Whittles is beautiful and I think i'll make queen size, I'll need more for backing I think. What are measurements for queen size? I'll have to investigate. I am thinking that's where I should start - then how many blocks? Yes?

usually a queen is about 102x112 or something like that... There is a chart somewhere, I'll have to see if I can find it or the link, unless someone else posts it before I do.
Depending on how big the blocks are going to be...whether you are planning on folding it up over the pillows, or just flat on the bed, how far down you want it to hang over the sides and top/bottom, etc. Also, if you are planning on a border or sashing between, then the number of blocks would be less.
Let me look for the link... this is a good place to start:

I understand border. What is sashing?
I am visiulizing Lots of butterflies (3" blocks ) scattered with black and 3 - 12" blocks with lyllies made in fussy cut on black. The black is a chicken wire pattern mimiking the garden fence. "Butterflies in my Garden".

sashing is the strips between the blocks. Sashing would be like a frame around a picture. If you use sashing, you don't have to worry as much about matching the seams like you do when you sew block to block. The above link shows examples.
Your idea for this quilt sounds very nice, especially using black against the colors of the butterflies.

Queen size is @85" X 90"
King is the 108" X 112"

easies way to desice how big you want the quilt is to put a flat sheet on the bed and see how it hangs. That will give you a good idea of size.

In looking at some magazines, I found info. about 1/4 "but not as precise as what we had in our info. here.

Thank you so much for your encouragement. I tend to wander of from the beaten track. And so be it. The piecing of traditional blocks is certainly a challenge. Thanks again. HD
