A week ago I noticed the very first foliage of the year breaking from Hybrid Tea rose The McCartney Rose, which I planted in early June. Today I noticed vigorous new growth on Voluptuous, which just barely made any leaves during the summer. Two or three other hybrid tea roses that produced no new growth since early June are making new leaves. And just last night the temperature dipped to 25F. Curiously, the new foliage seems to be doing fine. When I lived in TX I noticed that many roses went dormant - stopped making new foliage - during summer but resumed in fall. And it was not a problem. But here, hard freezes are more common. I lost fifteen new roses last winter.
My plan is to spray new growth with Freeze Pruf so the leaves are less likely to be damaged by daily temperature changes, and the roses can grow roots underground as long as possible. And to water regularly.
Does anyone else have experience dealing with this? I wonder what else I should do?
