I have used a skroll saw for sometime. Can you use a band saw the same way as a scroll saw? What kind is good for a begginer?

I've read that the band saw is the most 'forgiving' tool, you can heart yourself less using it.
No way will it cut the fine detail a scroll saw will.
I used mine yesterday to cut a 3" circle in 2 by stock. 1/4" blade
