Hi All, I hope you made the jump ok.
Sue, You lucky duck - Neo Exotica Velvet is a nice one!! I've got Neo. Pinstripe, which is similiar. It's really turned "blousey" on me in the past month, as it's coloured up & really opened out to flower.
Here's a pic from 1st of Oct.

And this is Neo. Pinstripe now - trying to attract pollinators I guess.
I do have ants that wander about on the broms. In particular big shiney black ones like a black green ant (if that makes sense), that don't bite at all & make aerial nests in sheltered spots.

Thanks Leisa. He's done a wonderful job. It's very bare at the moment because the weather has been unbarably hot and thought the broms were better left in the shade under the huge pine. I did put my potted Hippies in there though because I didn't want the flowers to fry on them. Colleen

As long as the paint didn't get in the water,
your tadpoles should be great. Was it Latex
or oil-base paint?

Thump! That was me landing in the new thread! he he.
Hi Charleen, thanks for your kind comments on neo 'Pheasant' in the last thread. Shes a cutie, and only about 5" high.
Neo 'Turnabout' looks like a biggy Leisa. Is it?
Neo 'Pinstripe' also looks good. Is it very big? I have one sold to me as neo 'Exotica satin' but I'm not sure if it is. It looks like your pinstripe but has more pink/red through it (will take a pic) and another listed as an Alan freeman hybrid, also pinstriped.
Colleen, your shadehouse looks ready to fill. I can't wait to see it. If you fill your newly painted pond with water (after the maximum drying time) then rinse it three times, it should be fairly safe. Are you putting tadpoles in, or hoping for frogs to take up residence. I tell you, you put water in there, they will come. I would let the water sit for a few days before introducing them (if you have town water with all its additives) or use the rain water from your tank, which would be preferrable. Let us know how you go.
I had quite a busy day from beginning to end, so I'm not hanging around long tonight. See yous tomorrow.

Hi everyone. Thanks for the info about the paint for the pond. My sister has heaps of tadpoles so was hoping to get some of them. If I don't hurry up they'll all be frogs. It's John's 39th birthday on Wednesday so I have bought a Heiroglyphica? for him. It's on it's way to him now so I hope it doesn't get caught up along the way as it will be a cooked Heiroglyphica. Will keep you posted about what's happening with the pond. I will fill with rainwater and get a water lily to put in there and a few other water plants. Will duck weed be okay from the river or will I have to rinse before putting it in? Colleen E-mail waiting for you Sue

Hi All Colleen great looking shade house your son did a good job now all you have to do is fill it, as for your frog pond I think everyone's been on the right track with rinsing it a few times, try washing the inside with vinegar ( C/acid in vinegar helps remove some of the toxins from plastic paint if oil or two pack leave it empty for a couple of weeks to cure then wipe it with vinegar) I would be happy to put water lilies and a few aquarium plants in the pond but would stay away from duck weed (weed is the right word) the water should be to be aerated, you could look on the net as what to food to use for tadpoles,Sue the fireball of mine is most probbable the same as yours (neo Bevvie Bee )
its a long drive from coff's to the BSQ show in Brisbane how long would that take ? (about three and a half ???) I'v got half a mind to go down myself for a bit of a sticky !!!!
do you have Neo curenta and if so what form ? pic is a young curenta they take on a much stronger colour than the photo shows and can get 1.2 Metres across,

I thought babies ate mosquitoes, but guess they have to have a little algae first. Love baby frogs. Yes, it doesn't take very long for frogs to find a watering hole. I hope you enjoy it.

Congrats on the shadehouse, Colleen. That is just too fine. Kudos to your son. Yes, duckweed is a weed, but it gets eaten quite readily in our small pond here. Nice thing about it is that it is small and easily scooped out and composted if it gets out of hand. Grin.
If I might ask, why and what color are you painting the pond?

Hi Charleen and Moon. Yes it will be occupied soon, just waiting for the weather to break a bit. This morning is lovely and cool so this might be it. The colour of the pond is bright orange and I thought that beige might be kinder on the eyes but I dont know if I'm going to get that done either. The paint is proper pond paint. The duck weed is actually a type of fern and I love the look of it. It's very pretty but I would hate it to get overgrown. Thanks for the comments. Colleen

Guys,
Re plants for ponds. I know it's a weed (here in QLD anyway) but does anyone have any water lettuce: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&rls=com.microsoft:en-a...
I've seen it growing in large pots in Asia (see pot in pic) & have always wanted a bit, but could never get it as it's considered a weed.
I know it's a bad thing to have unless you really are careful - but I'm prepared for the responsibility - I have seen it locally at a person's place, but it was some time ago & have no way of contacting the person. Does anyone have any?

Hey Colleen I think you made the right decision re not painting the pond - the orange is so eye catching & a great foil for the green that will surround it!!
I already looks wonderful!
Can you grow Nardoo there? I've tried here but instead of sitting on the water's surface, it grows above & looks like clover!! Doesn't get much sun protection etc. So I gave up on a water feature & keep a pot plant in it instead! Now if I could get some water lettuce from someone it might work...

Leisa I don't even know what Nardoo is yet but will google it and find out. I think the pond looks better as well and much less work. I will have to get a waterlily tomorrow and see what else will be good for the little tadpoles. I have a large varigated Ginger that I thought might look okay by the pond too. I have a small blue one as well but it's only about 9" high at the moment. I also have a Sydney rock Orchid but that's only little too. I still have broms to put in there. Lots of work because where I take everything from I have to straighten up and put other things in their place to keep the garden looking okay. I'll get there. Colleen

Looking good Collen. I see you got impatient (like me) and decided there was more important things to do than paint ponds and wait for it to cure and rinse it and wipe it, so I think the orange is pretty cool too! he he. i like all the plants you have there so far. It reminds me of home. He he.
Mike, its about 5 hours from here, but I am driving 2.5 hours to a bromeliad nursery on friday, where I am camping, then getting a lift the other 2.5 hours. I will, however, have to drive home on the saturday after the show, so I will need all of sunday to recover (or pot up my new babies) I haven't got as much money as i'd hoped, but I am SURE I will find something. It would be great to meet you, along with leisa, so be sure to let me know if you decide to go. I picked up a brom I thought might be a Cruenta, and it actually looks alot like yours in colour, however it is still a pup. I will post a picky tomorrow. I have another that I thought might be a Cruenta, but after posting it for ID on GW, I am none the wiser.
Leisa. I used to have water lettuce, but got rid of it when I was doing hort at tafe, because it was drummed into us about contributing to the weed problem. It is a cute little plant though, and easy to look after in a pot, but my pond overflows when it rains.
I have rainbow parsley which is a water plant, and pitcher plants, pickeral rush (you'd like that in a pot Leisa, and I have plenty to share) Water (Flag) iris, and quite a few others too. I'm happy to share if anyone would like some.

Hello Jean/moon and Charleen. Nice of you to drop in again.
Well, thats a long story.
Leisa, these are my pinstriped neos. Left one is 'Alan freeman hybrid' and right one is supposed to be 'Exotica Satin'

LeisaD, isn't Nardoo a type of water clover? Or is it the mosaic plant? I looked at so many beautiful plants when we were there, but I can't seem to keep all the names in my head...ah well, better to age than the alternative...GRIN

Hi All hope everyone is well, Colleen I read some where that if you par boil (blanch ) lettuce leaves then put through a blender this makes a paste mix with a little water place in a ice cube tray and freeze, this then is used to feed the tadploes,up this way almost all ponds at ground level get taken over by CANE TOADS #****##. Sue its about a 6 hour drive for me then traffic got to find the place as well so I might leave Friday and camp in Brisie, Lesia if I come down(and I think I will) will you be there Sat morning ? I could bring some water lettuce cheers plant is Nid Rutalens PS Colleen try this link re frogs. http://www.qm.qld.gov.au/inquiry/factsheets/leaflet0029.pdf

I'd love a piece of water lettuce & I will be VERY careful with it!! Any other water plants for a pot would be good too :-)

Leisa and Mike, I am hoping to be there at 8am for the bargains! he he. I will Dmail you with a photo so you know who to say hello to! I am so excited! 2 more sleeps! (going halfway on friday) I've picked up two more mowing jobs tomorrow, so a bit of extra money.

Hmmm sounds like I might need my pointy elbows for the crush at the door at 8am at the BSQ show!! And after all the lovely pics of Neo. Jewellry Shop I'll just have to get one this weekend! Trouble is I usually go with a wish list, but end up with all kinds of other things instead! I usually try to restrict myself to one box full - I just make sure it's a BIG box!! It should be a good show, as the April show was pretty quiet, as the Garden Expo was on the same weekend.
Mike, I just have a lot of country relatives who will drive the outskirts of Bris, and then catch a train or bus rather than tackle the traffic. But yes with the trusty GPS it's much easier!!

My SIL used his to get us from Northgate, QLD to Noosa, QLD, by what was supposed to be the quickest, easiest route...took us through the center of Buderim at the absolute peak of the rush hour traffic...Garmin's shortcut added 45 minutes to the drive...grin, but we did get there, grin

Colleen, that is so cute! What a great idea. I wish I had seen things like that when I was a younger kid. Now that I'm a big kid, I can make my own fun garden places. Thats what happens when we grow up eh?
Lisa, I wonder if N. kautsky like the warmer weather? I have two, both from different sources. One is in the garden and the other in a pot in the brom house. Both are very small, and haven't grown much at all, but both have pretty good colour, although mine look a little on the greener side than yours. I think theres another 2 up the back garden, i will have to have a look.
Mike, your Jewellery shop looks quite large, at least it has alot of layers of leaves compared to mine. Mine has gone VERY orange as it has matured. I'd have to go back through my photos to see what it originally started like. Ok, here is what it looked like a year ago (oct 08)

This is Lucas, the junkyard dog. He loves to tear up my flower pots. I didn't get him too may store toys so now when I do, he doesn't want to play with anything but the pots.I know this is Brom but hope you like the pic. It sort of goes with your pond.

Lucus looks like he's saying, "Who's disturbing my rest time?" Benny, our dog, wouldn't dare chew up my pots. He's very good in the garden except when next doors cat swipes at him under the fence. I think he would tear him to bits if he got hold of him. He's great with our cats and they're always smooching one another. I suppose we will be a bit lonely in here on the weekend with Sue, Leisa and Mike away, but never mind they will have plenty to show us and talk about when they get back. Colleen

Sorry Colleen - here you go. This was taken at Anne McBurnie's Open Garden last month.
I saw a similiar kind of head-shaped pot for sale at the local garden shop a couple of years back & thought it was great but kinda kitch & didn't buy it as I wasn't sure what I'd grow in it. Hmmm now I know exactly what I'd use it for - duoh!!!
Colleen yes I think a few dinosaurs & maybe crocodiles around the pond would be perfect, especially if it keeps the boys interested.
Awww Charleen he's soo cute & loveable looking. He looks like he's saying "Make a fuss of me Mum!" My cat Boris loves to help with the gardening - especially if I'm trimming a bush & dropping lots of small leaves or little branches down. I throw them on top of him & he just sits there slowly getting covered & purrs :-)
Wayne is it Aechmea Blue Cone? FCBS doesn't show a great pic but see: http://www.oztion.com.au/buy/auction.aspx?itemid=8897596
I think I own one of this plant; described by the person who gave it to me at the time as having a blue pom-pom flower. But as it's not flowered yet I just gotta wait! I hope it is, as it's a pretty plant & would look great at a clump.

The weather is doing just what it wants but that is o.k.
We are finally getting out of a drought, we have had about 4-5 years amd I am so glad.
This will be first winter we are going into spring with moisture in our gardens. They should do great next year.
I have flowers they are much larger than they are supposed to be. My Lantana and a lily that grew over 5foot.
Have discovered Brugmansias, such a beautiful , interesting plant. Love it.
They got a lot of Rain In the Atlanta area and had several floods and their Reservoirs are finally full.
It is Beautiful here today but just very cool for me. I like the weather to be warmer.

HELLO! I"M Back! Whew! What a bromalific weekend!
Hi Wayne, yes A. 'Blue Cone' a cultivar of A. cylindrata me thinks! Sometimes they are pine cone shaped, and sometimes squatter, pom-pom shaped. Mine is Pom-pom shaped. They look great in a big clump.
Leisa, I think your Neophytum in the head is N. 'Galactic Warrior' which kinda goes with the warrior theme I guess? I picked one up yesterday. Your Firecracker will do much the same, but be a smaller plant, as I think its a cross with Neo. 'Fireball'. It was really good to meet you yesterday, and thanks for taking such good care of us! I wonder if Mike has made it back home yet? My babies are still in the van because its still raining, so I don't even feel like sorting them. I've had a bromeliad overdose!
Charleen, Lucas looks cool! I had a dog that liked plastic pots too, and I used to have all my plants on the veranda, gated off so he couldn't eat them. Luckily the two i have now show no interest in pots, and even know not to cross the invisible line into the shade house. The cat, on the other hand, will shred any broms that I place on the floor, especially if they block access to HIS sunny spots! Hmmmpffff!
Its a bit of a shamble outside after the floods, and i have to go through the bottom shelf of my potting bench to see what I can save. I don't think I had anything too precious in there, mostly boxes for posting plants. There is sugar cane mulch from a*#%hole to breakfast, but thats no great drama. I do wish the rain would let up though.
I wasn't home when we flooded, so was giving instructions to hubby, over the phone at 11pm, on which broms to save from where. Poor man was stumbling around in the dark feeling for pots under benches and all! he he.
Anyway, I might start a new thread for the brom weekend, but don't anybody go away! Theres still room to chat here yet!
Sue

Stupidly wrote my post, then re read my last one, edited it for spelling and lost the one I was writing! Will I never learn?
Thanks for your concern Chrissy, it means alot. I read that you haven't had great news concerning your bro, so I wish you and he all the best in that reguard. Yeah, I think all is well. If the rain would just stop, everything will drain ok. Some of the retired, invalid broms will need de-mulching, but no damage. I have to watch them carefully now, incase we get a couple of hot days following the rain, because they will be all lush and green and turgid, and likely to wilt and burn very easily. I'm hoping none of the newbies are too soft from their previous growing conditions, but I'll check them for any signs of decline.
Leisa, are you home yet? What did you bring home? Lucky you getting a second day to look at the plants (on your tea break). I took pictures so i can browse the tables whenever I want! he he.
Charleen, the torch was in the car or the semi, and the yard was flooded, so he couldn't get to it. I had to direct him around the house (over the phone) in the dark (the power went out also) to find candles and matches! This happened back on march 31st also, but I was home alone to deal with it, so now he knows how I felt. I guess we'll make a flood plan incase it ever happens again.
Heres the invalids I will have to sort out when the rain stops

Great travel log & pics Sue!!
I think I had too much of a brom fix on the weekend - I've been off sick today. I'm feeling better this afternoon, after spending the day resting in bed. Luckily I managed to get all the potting up done yesterday morning, so all my new plants are out enjoying the bit of rain we've had overnight. Hopefully we'll get some more rain this evening. thanks again Sue & Mike for the lovely plants & for making the trip to Bris!!! It's been a highlight of my gardening year :-)
Mike how did you go looking at the property at Mt Tamborine. Hopefully you found it ok via GPS?
Sue I hope you don't have too much work to put the garden to right after all that rain. The news said 500mm in an evening - incredible!!

Hi Leisa, me too. Very tired and I have a sore back, so I didn't work and have been out for a massage and acupuncture so i can try to work tomorrow.
There will be a bit of cleaning up to do. I raked up piles of stuff that was left at the high tide mark. It was very interesting and I found several really gnarly peices of wood, ideal for mounting Tills! Bill is going to pick all the stuff up in the wheel barrow tomorrow. There was heaps of horse poo from the neighbours paddock, so we'll use that to replace all the topsoil that went out to sea. All our mulch is still here, its just been relocated, so Bill and i will work on that over the next few weeks. No hurry! Its gumboots for the next week at least, because its soggy and because there are heaps of hungry leeches! Ewwwww.
Leisa, it was my gardening highlight too! I can't imagine what could possibly top that!
Goodnight all, don't like to sit at the 'puter too long after a massgae, as it undoes all the good work.

Hi Charleen, not sure about seed. Some do produce, some are a bit stubborn, but Vriesea take an awful long time to grow from seed, so if it didn't come true (it might be a plain green plant) you'd have to wait a long time to find out. Pups are a little bit more stable, and much quicker to grow, although the quantity is less.
Leisa, how are you feeling?
Mike, I know you gave me A. fosteriana, and the N. cruenta (large skinny one), but what was the lovely red, squat Neo? Was it morris henry hobbs?
It was our wedding anniversary (9 years) yesterday, and hubby bought me a nice pot to put display plants in. I can't decide wether to keep it indoors or out?

2nd row (L-R): Jewellry Shop - ???(Hmmm nicely banded, but I don't know this one)
Front row (L-R): Fiesta - Kautskii - Break of Day(maybe)

Hi Charleen. I sure hope everyone is ok. It looks as though it must have been overload for everyone!
My Hubby is into vintage bikes, so picked up a 1978 Yamaha 500 single! We left at 3am and got home about 3pm today. Hubby rode the bike for a couple of hours till his bum went numb, then we put it in the back of the ute, had lunch at the pub in Casino and headed home.
I spent the afternoon relaxing, fed the goldfish and weeded around the pond garden while sipping a big cold glass of wine. A very relaxing afternoon. We'll probably go riding tomorrow, weather permitting.
What are you up to in the garden?
I sat on the ground to take this pic, just to see what the plants look like from ground level

I went and visited my friends broms today. Theres not much going on or needing doing with my broms, so I needed something new to look at. Hers are all looking good too, and both of us have noticed a big growth spurt since the rain and warmth of the last two weeks.
I've also noticed my Vriesea seeds have sprouted after only 14 days, when it usually takes longer than 21 days! I'd like to get as much growth on the littlies before the cool weather begins in May/June.

I'm not AWOL just busy chasing after my Mum again! I did a bit of moving things around this morning in the garden, but nothing new to report brom wise. I need to buy & mix a new batch of potting mix, as well as fertilize various plants in the garden - next weekend maybe...
I noticed something interesting last night - a cream coloured flower on a certain brom - it's not open during the day, so had to duck out just now & take a pick.
Any guesses as to what it is ;-) ????
Colleen your pond is looking lush already. Hope the heat doesn't do any damage. You've got a very realistic little mammal there of some sort - very cute!
Last night we thought we heard a toad clomping along at the back of the garden & hubbie got out the croquet mallet to do the deed - only to discover it was a green frog!! I'm hoping it finds my pond-in-a-tuff-tub (with lovely water plants thanks to Sue & Mike) & stays.

Hi leisa, I reckon that might be a Vriesea fosteriana flower? My clues to its ID are the night flowering Some Vrieseas) and the speckles on the bracts (fosteriana). How did I do?
I'm glad you have recovered and have just been too busy to drop by. I always seem to be short of bromeliad potting mix too!
Its very hot here today and also staemy. I'm having a little break at home before heading off to the next job. I don't know how I will survive this summer. It seems as though I can't take the heat like I could a couple of years ago. Actually, its the humidity that really kills!
Anyway, nothing new going on here, except an orchid flowering in the brom house, but the camera is in the van parked out front, so i will have to put the pic on later

Sue, you are completely correct - Vriesea fosteriana it is !!
I've heard of night flowering plants (like cactus etc) but thought it was only rare broms that did this and never actually had one myself. I'd noticed during the day that the flowers seemed to have opened & reclosed, but just thought it was happening while I was at work etc. The whole flower stem is so glossy & speckled - even without the flower it's rather impressive.
The heat is also getting to me these days & Sunday was quite hot & humid to boot. I sweat like a pig !! Maybe we've just been spoiled by having reasonable weather up to now. So summer is finally here!! No bad only

Ha, reasonable weather! We obviously live in different countries! he he. Its muggy again here today, but a wind sprung up aroun 9am which helps to dry the sweat! I have to take a towel with me into the garden to wipe my face and brow! I'm home on a break again, but about to set off for the afternoon jobs, mowing and tidying up fallen leaves in a courtyard garden. *sigh*
Does your Fosteriana flower have a sticky substance on the floral parts? I noticed on some of my friends Vrieseas that they get a glue like substance on them. I'm still waiting on the appearance of flowers from my V. intermedia. The spike looks like its fully formed, but no blooms yet. Maybe I'll have to go out with a torch tonight, incase I am missing the event too. If you want to pollinate the flowers, you have to be out there at night also. Are you going to have a go with yours? I spread some vriesea seed from a small one onto the tree fern trunk in the front garden. and i noticed there are some tiny ones growing there now. Awesome!
Gotto go

Hmmm hadn't thought about trying to create seed. Good work getting the seeds on the tree fern trunk!
What do I do? There seems to be plenty of pollen in the flower. Do I need two flowers? I only have one plant flowering & only one flower open at a time so far .
Can I create seeds with that?
It's warm here today. I'll have to set up the fan as I'm working from home (on the PC) & it's getting very warm!

Hello all. I never come on here much as I don't have the amount of lovely broms you all have. I am always lurking though and love to see all the photos. I have some puppies of my own on some broms so will have a growing collection. One of my 'Lucky Stripes' is having twins and 'Halleujah has a pup. Sue's lovely V. carolinata has a pup.
I am excited today though and have to ask some very novice questions. I bought seed of Vriesia 'Red Chestnut' a few months ago. I did as instructed with medium etc and planted in Sept. I have the seed in a plastic container with lid, inside a zip lock bag. I used a mister to damp the medium and seed and left in where it gets bright light in the lounge. I opened it today to check and the container is full of tiny wee little green things. You can see each little seed with it's shoot.
Now , what do I do ?? Leave them alone until big enough to handle or open bag and container.
I know I will get expert advice and am looking forward to being a mum of all these little babies.
Thank you for any help
Jean.

I wrote a big post last night and got magically signed out, so I gave up in disgust!
Leisa, try using the one flower, the put some of the pollen onto a peice of tin foil, to use on a different flower the following night. I think you can self pollinate though.
Chrissy, nice to see some old favourites are still favourites! Thanks for the link. I always enjoy good pics.
Congratulations Jean! I assume the plastic bag is to help keep it heated? You can probably remove that now. Vriesea seed are very slow to grow, so you're in for a long wait! he he. Now the trick is to keep them alive! Algae is a big concern, but if you add some Alginox (a pool algaecide with no copper, available at pool shops) at a rate of 1ml to 1 litre, into your sprayer, this should keep algae at bay, and also seems to work on fungus gnats, which hover around laying larvae and eating the roots! I also use a sprayer with a diluted mix of orchid fert, and apply once a week. You could probably lift a corner of the lid too, just to let some of the air and gasses exchange. Keep us posted as to how you go, and once again, well done!

Thanks Sue. The wait can't be any longer than waiting on epi seedlings from seed to flower around 4 yrs. or more. The two containers can sit together and talk during the long wait.
They are in the lounge so hopefully no gnats. I had the plastic bag just for a bit more warmth but will now remove it.

Oh good Jean, I'm glad you have patience! In 10 months, my V. heiroglyphica seedlings are about 5mm tall, and of around 100 seed sown, I have 5 left! Mind you, when the container got blown on the ground in the wind, that didn't help matters! 5 was all I couold find, so I'm surprised they survived the dump in the gravel and the subsequent repotting.
Here are some Vriesea seedlings growing on the tree fern on the south side. I don't know how they'll do, as its an experiment and I am not helping them anymore than putting the seed there in the first place. Not a great pic, but you get the idea.

I took a pic of my Aechmea fasciata var Purpurea. This is the original plants pup, and the flower seems alot taller than the original.
Computer is going really slow! Might come back on later as I have to mow some more of my lawn.

Sue, those seedlings must be VERY SMALL, as those roots on the tree fern are pretty fine (like the thickness of uncooked spaghetti?). I hope they survive, they look healthy & it's a great idea. Your Aechmea fasciata var Purpurea is lovely. I've got Ae. fasciata in my garden in a slow spreading clump, but it doesn't seem to flower. Do you do anything to your's to get it to flower?

Sue, Neo. Fanfare's NOT a big plant, so that must be a small frog, but it looks fat & healthy!! We're hearing frogs croaking in the house gutters for the first time since we moved here (15 years ago). The lady down the street has a frog pond & I think I can thank her for the frogs around my house. Maybe the general environment is healthier too. I saw a lovely long skink hiding in a brom pot yesterday, when I was doing some repotting. I've still got more repotting to do, but it's stinking hot outside - 31C & 50% humidity. I might wait until later this afternoon when it's cooler.
It's not a brom, but here's my mini pond in progress. Plants curtesy of Mike & Sue! I've made it in a big plastic tub & have another large ceramic urn I might move the tub into, as it fits better than into this black pot. I'm hoping the frogs find it & visit occasionally. It's on the open side of my patio - is it likely?

Also here's a link to some pics I took at the BSQ meeting last Thurs (hope it works) (the first 19 pics or so): http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=4676&id=10000017998889... (I hope this link works!!)

And I thought Anne McBurnie's clump of Neo. punctatissima was Anne McBurnie's was impressive. For me this is a REALLY slow growing plant - I have one or 2 belligerent pups! I'll take me years to grow a clump like this.

Thanks for the link Leisa. Very nice plants. I too, was told Vriesea gutatta was hard to flower, but haven't had any trouble. I just leave it alone! he he. Those punctatissima are slow, but you can grow them faster in the shade, with regular spring/summer fertiliser, then colour them up in winter. They will grow a little larger and strappier like that though. I like 'em small and golden, so just buy them whenever I can and plant them together. I use plastic tubs like yours for my water plants, and they have heaps of tadpoles and frogs in them, so I'm sure yours will be no exception!
We've had a hot day too, but I'm pretty much up to date with my repotting, maybe just a couple more to do. I am always surprised at the new pups forming on the tired old mums! They just go on, and on!
Hey, Mike! WOOHOOO! Where are you?
Hello Charleen,he is a little frog (as Leisa suggests) about 2.5cm (1") long! And yes, he must have had a good meal! A real fatty!

Hi All, in answer to a question, yes, my name is spelt Glwyn. My father was Welsh but I think that he got a little carried away with the "L's" as myself & some siblings seem to have got more than the normal share.
Thanks for the good wishes, hopefully, last chemo session this Friday, all things being well.
I'm very envious of the beautiful pics of the various broms, they are absolutely wonderful. As soon as I'm well enough, I'll take some of my garden bed & see if anyone can tell me what I have. I'm sure that they will be very "garden variety" as I have just picked them up here & there & I certainly have not paid $150 for any of them!! (My goodness, do people really pay that sort of money for a plant? I grizzle at $20!)
Anyway, exhaustion is my big foe at present so must away to lie on my "stretcher in paradise". My absolutely wonderful husband of 43 years saw that I could not relax under the pergola because I kept on seeing repotting, trimming, fertilising etc that needed doing NOW. So, my nongardening, farmer type who only ever used BIG machinery, husband repotted my whole garden of pots, asked directions for fertilising & trimming & then decided that I really needed a larger area & has cut pailings to keep wind out, strung chimes, cleaned filter on the fishpond & has virtually made me a paradise to lie in.
I'll try to get to the "Tea Room" soon & chat there, Glwyn

The brom that's (kind of) in the middle of the pic, with the pink tips - do you know what it is? I think you sent me one. I'll have to take a pic of mine, as it's getting lots of sun & looking quiet colourful.
Sue the big Neo cruenta(?) you gave me when you were up for the BSQ show is settling in very well at my place. it's enjoying a spot that gets lots of sun.
Mike - are you out there somewhere????
Here's my Vr. Ginger flowers - they're big & plump! It's amazing what a weak dose of Thrive flower & fruit every 2-4 weeks does for them!

Wow, you are getting started big time. I have all those save for the Peach and Orange Butterfly (hedychium coronaria) I have the white butterfly. They will all do okay in the ground with protection (good heavy mulch). Mine die down in the winter and resprout each spring. Most of them are planted under the oak trees or near the southside of the house. I have a few you didn't name, so when we get ready to Cactus garden, I can send you some of those if you like.

Hi Glenda. Glad to here that you've had rain too. We had a mini cyclone go through here the day before yesterday. Boy did it make a mess of the tree everywhere. Whole rows of vines were just put down on the ground. They're saying that we've had about 4 inches of rain in a week. That's about half our yearly rainfall. It's a bad time to be having rain like that for the blockers as it will split the fruit. The cockies are saying that they can't harvest their wheat while it's wet either. My garden loves it. It's been real tropical, humid and then it comes in again at dusk and rains again. It's quite nice outside at the moment though nice and cool. Don't know where everyone else are.Must be busy. Colleen

Hi All, I'm still here :-)
I did a fair bit of repotting last weekend. I was a bit under the weather last week, I think the heat is getting to me. And was also busy with work & stuff with my Mum (a very long story with trying to sell her house)... But hubbie & I went away this weekend to the Sunshine Coast, so that was a nice break away from it all.
Here's a pic of the brom you sent me Colleen. It seems to like the (morning) sun & I had to repot it as it had out grown it's original pot!!!!
Sue have you expanded you shade house yet ;-)
