I was working in my front garden yesterday (wasn't everyone?) and found this pod on my front walk. It was actually wrapped in it's tunic but I peeled it away to see what it was. I've never seen one like this out there so I'm calling on DG to help me identify it.
The picture shows it next to my mouse and sitting on a regular brick, for size comparison.
Some Crinums, particularly Crinum bulbispermum, DO have multiple seeds in their pods. Toward the bottom of this page: http://mainlyamaryllidsgarden.com/seedbench.php you can see there are several seeds in each pod. I'm sure there are several others as I've seen them in the botanical garden where I volunteer.
Here's another area of Mainly Amaryllids which shows how the Crinum seeds look when they start sprouting (about halfway down the page): http://mainlyamaryllidsgarden.com/ah/amseeds.htm That website also has lots of other info on starting Crinum seeds. Feel free to contact Jim Shields at Mainly Amaryllids and ask him any questions you might have.
I'm remembering I planted calla lilies in spring '08 and nothing happened. This year was time to downsize my big, huge cannas, which probably eclipsed the calla lillies. I'm thinking I must have inadvertently picked up the calla lily pod (then dropped it or it escaped) with the canna leaves.
I'm happy with that. Thanks for all the help. I love DG!!!
