I have two Veitchia Merrilli pairs. They got hit a bit with the frost last Christmas, but not too bad. I think they probably would have gotten hit worse however, they are between our pool our our neighbors pool behind us and we both kept our pools circulating during the frosts we had last year. There were a couple of fronds with their tips burnt and some splotchy patches of frost damage, but that was about it.
Over the summer, I've been watching the frond growth and was watching for the last of the fronds that had gotten burnt to die and fall off. I *think* they are at that point where those last remaining fronds from last winter are now just falling off. However, I have a concern...
We just got home from a week's vacation and noticed that about four fronds had bent (but did not break). They were mostly green fronds and we couldn't understand why they would just bend prior to dying and then falling off naturally. I've also noticed that there seems to be a set of short/stubby fronds and the fronds that opened last are back to a normal length.
I'm going to post some pictures and would appreciate comments. I'm hoping there is nothing seriously wrong with these palms as they are two of my favorites.
By the way... we've had record breaking heat temps here. Not sure if that has something to do with it. I don't water regularly... in fact, I rarely water. We are under water restrictions... plus I find that *usually* we get rain enough to keep from running the sprinkler pumps.
Here are the pics...
