I know this looks like a house fly, but it was much bigger - 1/2" - 5/8". Is it just a house fly with a weight problem, or is it a different species altogether?

This is a muscoid fly, but not a house fly; it more likely is a blow fly (family Calliphoridae) - see http://tinyurl.com/yj257x2 for some examples.
