I've read that ducks eat slugs, but will they also eat snails? My friend's garden is loaded with snails, and I'm thinking she might could use a pair of ducks to clean it up.
If ducks do eat snails, what are the quietest ducks? She lives in town.
Just to bump this up, I know that ducks love slugs but I don't know if they're figured out that snails are slugs in fancy wrappings. We used to have Indian Runner ducks and they seemed pretty quiet.
I googled it and apparently they do...But Marans chickens are suppose to eat slugs and in my experience an occasional chicken of any breed will eat a slug--but you can't depend on it.
Here is one answer--but there were a lot, all saying that ducks, especially Indian Runner ducks, love snails.
Yes, I googled it too and found an article about orchards using flocks of ducks to control snails.
I came across the idea in Eliot Coleman's book on 4 season gardening... he uses ducks to control slugs in his garden. There's a cute movable "Duckingham Palace" pictured, with instructions for building.
I think a pair of pencil ducks noodling around the back yard would be lovely.
=0) And they'd be much less destructive to the garden than chickens.
May I ask, what are pencil ducks? I googled it but all I can find are inflatable boats. I can't really see a pair of those noodling around anyone's backyard unless you live on a houseboat...lol!
Oh, that's what we call Indian Runner ducks... some neighbors had some, I think they were a color called pencil, but somehow that turned into pencil ducks, 'cause they stand so upright... like a pencil. Everybody in the neighborhood just called 'em pencil ducks... I think I learned the name runner duck later.
They look to me like they're trying to pass themselves off as geese...
