| It does look poplar-like (Populus spp.), though I can't find one with such exaggerated leaf shape.
(I don't see any resemblance to the referenced photos of western redbud, but then I'm not familiar with the species. Am I missing something?) |

| No altagardener, you aren't missing anything ... my eyesight isn't the greatest so the Cercis was just a guess.
How about Populus fremontii? : http://lh3.ggpht.com/_6LWjP0sZ22w/SiZZ7DIMcvI/AAAAAAAAEzQ/Fv...

| Wow, that last one sure is a gorgeous tree but apparently very invasive! Look at all the negative comments in Plant Files! |

| Ditto to Growin - it is Triadica sebifera, formerly Sapium sebiferum. A dreadful weed in many areas, tho' not sure if Calif is one of the areas where it behaves nasty.

| Greg, they are beautiful trees, just horribly pushy...we convinced our neighbor to remove a volunteer from his yard, after we showed him the 13 seedlings it put out after only 3 years in his yard. A year later and we have found a half dozen or so seedlings coming up...pretty, but very rude. Kinda hard to think of trees as being weeds...grin |
