I recently purchased a tree at home depot. I was thinking it was a ficus but realized the leaves are much larger than the ficus tree I am familiar with. I didn't realize until I got home that the tree was not identified. Any help is much appreciated!!

was it in the houseplant section or outside in the outdoor tree section? sometimes they will have the name on the bar code white label stuck to the pot.

you were probably thinking F. benjamina but it is not that one, as you know now. it still could be a Ficus though. can you give us a size on the leaf? sometimes things appear larger or smaller than they really are.

Some of the older leaves are 3.5 in. wide and 6 in. long. The majority of the leaves are 2.5 in wide by 4 in long. I looked everywhere for an ID of the plant and there was none. This was in the houseplant section of Home Depot.

I don't think it's a ficus species - there's too much green stems and the leaf veins looks very different for a fig species.

The leaf reminds me of a Medinilla. I've seen them in the HD locally too and have looked at the label but forget. I keep thinking something Cinnamon or Cinnamomum...

My first thought was Medinilla too but I've never seen a potted one so tall. Could it be Cinnamomum camphora? http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www-staff.it.u...

edited to say: Although I have C. camphora: http://www.floridata.com/ref/c/cinn_cam.cfm in my yard and the leaves are nowhere as large as the ones on the plant in question.

The plant is definitely a Cinnamomum. Maybe true Cinnamom, Cinnamomum verum.
The plant will need to get mature to determine which Cinnamomum species it is.

barbiejp: Here are some images of C. verum: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&source=hp&q=images of ...

Whichever Cinnamomum you have, they are all very pretty. I don't know anything about growing one as an indoor houseplant but I guess you could prune it to keep it in bounds.

Maybe they accidently shipped some to your home depot, thinking they are ficus!
