I hate cutting back the roses. With a late or cold spring, a very short blooming period is obliterated by arrival of Japanese beetles. So, I'm hoping that I can have a longer blooming period by not cutting back the roses until the forsynthia blooms and cut only the dead canes.
Does this make sense...I don't think I'm jeopardizing the life of the roses? Tie the canes together so that the usual large styrofoam cone cane be slid down the rose. The canes will extend out of the top of the cone. I'd then fill the cone up to 1' with wood chips.
My rationale is that the wind chill has to be the killer and the cone will protect more of the rose than when I cut the roses back to completely cover the rose.
Thoughts?
thanks
