I raise the Blue Mottled and Black Mottled. If I sit for a moment, they come right over and jump up into my lap and make themselves comfortable.

I don't raise them, but got some by mistake (they were out of what I wanted, and shipped the banties instead) and love them In fact, my best little ChickenBuddy is the Red Bantam Cochin Roo, named Jimmy. When he gets out and can't find his way back, he calls until I come get him:).

Yep and love them. We have Blue Cochins, and Birchen Cochins and one Splash. They are the most friendly and loveable little things. My kids named one of the Birchen Cochins Buddie because she always hopped up on their legs every time they went into the pen.

Green your roo is very pretty. He looks to be a Cochin/Silkie mixture. He isn't full Cochin or full Silkie but he sure is handsome. He looks a lot like our Cochin/Silkie mix roos only he is a different color.

Green - do they have 5 toes? They do look like silkie crosses to me. If they have 5 toes, you can be sure of it! Cochins only have 4 toes. I love cochins and silkies too!

Sure look like silkie/cochin cross to me, too. I'd never had cochins before but I am totally sold on them. Such little pets and I love them dearly. I have the Marans also but they are lunatics for the most part. The picture of the 2 chicks I took. If you hold them in your hand upside down for 30 seconds they go sound asleep.

Green, This is a picture of our Cochin/Silkie mix roo, he is mixed with a Birchen Cochin and a Blue Silkie so he has the Birchen coloring. He has a mix of Cochin and Silkie feathering, he also has a bit of a plume and beard. Your roo looks like it took more after the Silkie side whereas ours took more after the Cochin side. We ended up with two of them. Both have this coloring but one stands and looks a bit more Silkie and the other stands and looks a bit more Cochin. Funny how that works. They are beauties though.

Green - I don't actually think that they are pure silkies. They certainly have silkie characteristics (I presume they both have 5 toes and dark colored skin) but their heads are not silkie looking to me. All of my pure silkies have had a sort of a poof ball of "fluff" on their heads. Yours have those smooth heads that look more like cochin heads. I think those hens are probably silkie-cochin mixes.

Does anyone else agree?

For example, if you look at the pictures here:
http://www.americansilkiebantamclub.com/
http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGP/Silkies/BRKSilkies.ht...

you will see that they all have a poofy head, some a lot more poofy than yours, some closer to yours, but still more fluffy looking. Are yours wet in that picture? If so, maybe their poofy head feathers are just stuck down by being wet.

I just think they're not quite right for full silkie. That said, they're awfully cute!!

CMoxon, yes, I agree. The link is great, and shows what they look like in my dreams :). I have two Silky hens, and while they look nothing like the links, they are much "fluffier" and have heavily feathered feet.
Green, my silkies (and they are only "production silkies, and surely very poor examples of their breed) have black skin, which I think is characteristic of all silkies, while in the picture yours seem to have red skin. Also, my hens have less distinct tail feathers, they are more like mounds of fluff. Of course, I could be WAY out of line, I know that the ones I have are NOT what they should be, but I love them anyway. But, I love mutts of all species.

I'm sure that some of our very knowledgable Silkie owners/breeders will be able to tell you more.

The picture of the two hens togather was taken when I first got them and they were not in great health and it was raining that day I took the picture. The mom looks differant than the other, they are almost the same color but the mom has darker skin but their feet are not fully feathered, the other one has a red face so I would say she is a mix.

Yes Green, I think you're right about the mom. She does appear to have the right skin color and the poofy head that I would have expected on a full silkie, and she does look better when she's dry!! LOL!!
