Beginning this Friday, come join in the mystery! I will be posting directions for a Yuletide Mystery Quilt for the next 5 Fridays, just in time for the holidays. I promise it will be fun and easy and not extravagantly time consuming! Fabric choices and requirements with the first set of instructions will be posted then. You'll need basic quilting tools such as rotary cutting ruler, rotary cutter, mat, sewing machine.

Happy Holidays,

I'll post instructions and you just follow along at your own pace. Things at work have gotten kinda crazy in the past couple of days, one of our team had to take some time off so the rest of us are picking up the slack. If I don't have it posted by tomorrow night, it will be posted on Saturday for sure. I had hoped to have my camera back by now but I won't have it back until the 15th. Once I get it back, I'll also post pics along with instructions.

ok! I'm going to try to get everything together today at work so I can get things posted. This will be a wallhanging size project. Stay tuned! Work kinda took priority this week but I did have a great day yesterday! I received my solid crystal 5 yrs of service Pepsi bottle award, a new Pepsi polo shirt from my boss and a quarterly Role Model award so I'm going to choose the food processor from the choice of gifts flyer that came with it. I also got to bring home the laptop that my daughter won in the Pepsi Thirst for Knowledge essay contest for our kids in grades 9-12. She's really excited but I have about 2 days of updates to run on it and get it set up for her. I really do love my job and the people I work with are tremendous. what more could a girl ask for? a great job and people at work and wonderful friends here:)

Are you ready to begin? I am! Let's get to it :)

For this first set of pieces you will need:

***Any kind of square ruler at least 6.5 inches with a diagonal line across it from corner to corner.***

12-6.5 inch squares of light fabrics. You can make them all one fabric or go scrappy! for country colors choose creams or for traditional holiday colors you can choose a white on white.

12-6.5 inch squares of red, green, or dark blue. Again, you can cut them all from one fabric or go scrappy and make each one from a different fabric.

Once you have 12 lights and 12 darks cut into 6.5 inch squares, then on the backside of each light fabric with a pencil or fabric marking pen, mark a line diagonally from one corner to the other. Then, along that middle line you just marked, on each side of it mark another line 1/4 inch from the middle line. Once you've marked the 3 lines on the back of the light squares, take one light and one dark square facing each other, pin them so they match up perfectly. Do not sew along the middle line, that's your cutting line. Sew on the 2 lines you marked on each side of the middle line. Once you have all your blocks sewn with stitching along both sides of the middle line, cut down the middle line you drew. You should have 24 half square triangles! don't worry if they aren't square or uniform in size, we will square them up. I will post an example I did in Paint.

you can do it!! Pam it is easy peasy ,
one hint on these...if you sew on one side of the line in one direction, then sew on the other side of the line in the other direction...blocks end up flatter, and therefore easier to cut...

if you sew both sides in the same direction you can end up with a wiggle, in the stitching..sorta like you were pulling the threads to make a ruffle...if you get what I'm trying to say???

I put all my squares in a line ready to sew, sew one side of each..(chain stitching) when I get to the last one, sew to the end, lift presser foot, pivot block, sew down opposite line, follow chain, to stitch all blocks...sides sewn in opposite directions...

I just went thru the joanns sale catalog for now...and the one coming up tomorrow . Looks to me like, if you want fabric, its the sale that ends today you want. Not alot of fabric on sale with the next one. They do have the buy one get one sale of all the wall notions. And also, my fave...take 50% off the clearance stuff in the back.

Actually, I was there yesterday for embroidery thread and used that coupon, but luckily, I have another and actually need to go back today for some eyelet for a baby quilt. Need to find that perfect Christmas fabric for this one! Of course, I don't think the eyelet is on sale, so I will use the 40% off coupon on that, but the 20% can be used on sale items!

I sure can do that :) this one is fat quarter friendly, no major yardages required. If you are going scrappy, the more the better!

~WORD OF ADVICE-PREWASH YOUR REDS~
Reds have a tendency to "bleed". Something about the dye process in red fabrics leaves a lot of excess dye behind. If you are unsure about your reds you can fill your kitchen sink halfway with warm water and a few drops of laundry soap to soak for about 20 minutes. Take a clear glass and dip out some water to hold up to the light. If it's pinkish, you have excess dyes. For scraps I just swish them around really good and replace the water a couple of times till it stays clear, then lay them out flat on a towel to air dry. larger pieces of 1/2 yard cuts or more can be washed in the machine on low agitation setting.

reds- 1 yard or equivelant of fq's or scraps
greens-same
lights-same

you may want to gather up some filler medium colors, maybe 2 fat quarters' worth, for variety.

**if you are choosing to do a dark blue/white combo, have available at least 1 yard of each, darks and lights.

Weeellll, let's bounch around a few ideas about this first.

1. No way I can do this after January 1st.
2. Say, each person who takes out should be a piece(s) back in similar to the size they took?Or just put some back into the stash? Don't want to restrict so others can't join the fun.
3. Would you rather do just fat quarters?
4. Swap with a buddy?
5. One box that starts and moves around similar to what was done with the Traveling Gnomes?

Let's have some feed back and we can go from there. I certainly do have fabric I would love to exchange for other peoples "scraps"

if we do FQs or that size from a stash, someone starts the box, sends it on. Next person replaces whatever they took out with something different (take 2, put 2 different back in), then send to next person on the list. By the time it gets back to the Sender, they would have all different FQs, right?
Or would that be expensive for shipping? Not sure how much that would be for a big envelope or whatever. Don't know what the Traveling Gnomes was about, but sounds fun.

Basically that is what we could do. Or use the smallest priority mail box--not sure of postage right now.

With the traveling gnome that is exactly how we did it--you got the gnome, kept it for a week and made pictures of him with your garden or points of interest, some added goodies to his box and then mail to next person on the list. The list was posted so everyone could see where the gnome was or should be. Of course one did get lost and hasn't been found as of today that I know of. One I think is still traveling.

Cant you just see a group of kids who have had a tough time...a room full of fabric and machines...and someone to point them in 'right' direction. That is my downfall...not a sewer of clothes. yea right..polyanna sounding I know. I bet there are some out there tho that would thrive.

Pam, in our case it is through Norm's cancer doctor. The ones I leave with her are given to a cancer child when he leaves the hospital. One place that always is looking for things for children (at least around here) are the police and fire depts. Imagine a child that's homeless from a fire being given a quilt all their own. Or a child of domestic abuse or the list could go on. Call your local police/fire depts. Call a women's shelter.
The reason I don't mention hospitals here is because of new laws that went into effect this past year. These laws say that nothing can be given a child unless it is certified that it is made from flame retardent materials. It would cost you between $10,00.00 - $15,00.00 to get certified. It is a lengthly and costly process. (Project Linus is fighting this in Congress but I haven't heard anything lately.)

those look great Mittsy! I love that white on white paisley and all of them :)

This technique is so fun, especially if you just make some when you have scraps and toss them into a bin. Soon, you'll have enough to make a pretty cool scrappy quilt. I'll see if I can find some links or pictures of an example.

pillow cases - conkerrcancer.com the web site lists donation sites.
from the Aug newsletter:
The first week of August...that means that Camp Sunrise is in full swing and that the children there are resting their tired heads every night on the 200 bright, child-friendly, summer oriented pillowcases that we sent there! I know that the bugs, frogs, sports themes, butterflies, candy, sailing, rainbows, sunshines, etc. will all help them to get a restful night's sleep so that they're eager to start a new day!

Barb, I do have child flannel. Pieces are less than 1/4 yd. Can you use those. All sorts of colors & prints. The left overs from the pillowcases. I've been tossing them into a box for quite awhile now.

That quilt would be great to do using Thangles or Triangles on a roll. And I have all those scraps... and this "thing" for triangles!!!!

I love the idea of sharing our stash with each other. I have somethings that I could turn loose of and share with others and it would be fun to see what kind of fabric you all would like to ditch! One of the Priority boxes wouldn't be too expensive to send around.

I would vote for putting in any usable size fabric (no small scraps unless requested) ; limiting it to FQ or *yds might mean that I wouldn't get to see a piece of great fabric that had my name on it. Just take and put, and be the polite ladies we all know we are.

as long as your blocks are exactly 5.5 inches square right now they should be fine. When we sew these together, they will finish at 5 inches. Don't sew them together yet however :) it's part of the mystery as to where you'll be using these. They could be for the middle or they could be for the outer border! Im not telling!

**Squaring up your blocks**

If someone with a camera can post a picture I'd appreciate it, I cannot find the cord for the cameraphone to post my own.

Once you have your blocks made, you will square them up to 5.5 inches. I'm going to try to explain this without pics so bear with me :)

I find a place in the middle of my cutting board where I can place the block, usually with the diagonal seam starting at the lower left corner running up to the upper right hand corner. I place the square ruler at the 5.5 inch markings along the left edge and lower edge with the diagonal line on the ruler exactly laying over the diagonal seam. I then trim off any excess of the right hand edge and along the top. This is easiest for me since I'm right handed. As long as the line on the ruler lays over the seam you should have a nice exact half square triangle with the diagonal seam running perfectly into each opposing corner. If there is any raggedy edges along the left and bottom side I did not trim off, I'll simply turn the block until those sides are on the right and top then trim up the edges. I tried to draw up in Paint an example below. The thicker lines respresent the square ruler with the 0(zero) corner in the upper right hand corner. and the dotted line represents the diagonal line on the ruler that should be right over your diagonal seam. Trim off the right and top sides to square them up to exactly 5.5 inches. Like I said though, I am right handed so if there's a lefty among us that can share how you cut it, that would be great. Please don't laugh at my example like I did :) It looks like a kindergartener wrote the text lol...hopefully it helps to show what I mean.

OK, so:
1) we cut squares @ 6 1/2"
2) place them right sides together
3) mark corner to corner diagonally with a pencil, and sew 1/4" on both sides of that line
4) cut apart on the line that was drawn on the fabric
5) press to the dark
6) cut down to measure @ 5 1/2" square
7) sit back, admire the pretty blocks and wait for Friday... LOL

Did I miss anything?

I have some Christmasy darks and lights, but not 12 of each. And I have various lights and darks, but not the colors that I want to go together. White tonals, but prefer ivorys or creams... decisions, decisions!

Thanks Marion! Lately, I need things in a simple list so I can remember them easier... Went from multitasking, craziness 7 day a week, 52 weeks a year, for 10 yrs, to sitting at home... My old boss told me that I did my jobs like a teenager learning to drive - 90 miles an hour, then put on the brakes, repeat, repeat, repeat... LOL I always adjusted quick while working, but here at home, sometimes my 'multi-tasking' multiplies in each room, but it doesn't always get finished... vacuum still plugged in, furniture moved... drywall started, Farmville plowed but not planted, etc... the only thing that does get finished every day is the bed made, the news watched/listened to, cats fed and supper made... My lists have lists... LOL

Now I know why Mom always made lists... however, she writes all over the paper when she adds something, Charlie can't figure out what she wants to buy or how many. ROFL

sounds just like...ME

ROFLMBO...the only thing I finish on a daily basis is getting the list written...

well the critters do get fed!!! and I occasionally remember to feed myself...(when I get reminded)

My co - workers tell me "thunder, go to lunch" I get so involved, I don't even think about what time it is...same way when I am sewing...thank goodness for DH. He come in and hands me a plate of food "stop for five minutes and eat some of this!!"

He knows I will get up and eat, cause I don't want the food next to the fabric!!!!!!

HA! That's funny T, I'm here catching a snack and I've moved all the fabric waaaaay away, so now I CAN'T work and eat at the same time! By all means, take care of the fabric first, THEN think about eating! I'm almost done squaring off the blocks to 5.5 inches. I've used white on white, off-white on off-white, and a few red, green and blue Christmas-y scraps that I've had in my stash for years. So, I have three kinds of darks and two kinds of lights. I sold my camera at my last tag sale because everyone kept mocking my huge 10 year old digital camera (with floppy drive no less!!) and I haven't gotten around to getting another one. I'll get myself one for Christmas! Looking forward to seeing other's purrrrty blocks!
