| SOLVED - thanks! This viney shrub is growing at the Alamo in San Antonio. Also see in further south in the Rio Grande Valley. The leaves and stem are thick and feel succulenty. Blooms spring, summer and fall. I've heard a common name (which I've forgotten). Anyone know what this is?

| I agree. A really nice plant for fall blooms. Really brightens up a light shady area. |

| Odontonema strictum has been misapplied to Odontonema cuspidatum by the horticultural industry for many years.
True Odontonema strictum is a synonym of Odontonema tubiforme which has mauve to pink flowers, which are larger than those of O. cuspidatum.
Odontonema cuspidatum has scarlet red flowers, as seen in Mbsimmons' photo above.
The PF should separate the two species along those lines. |

| thanks, dave. i was going by Hortus Third and it was still called strictum back then. i do see that Hortus Third and the USDA Plant Database both show O. tubiforme (syn. strictum) as being red. i wonder if the book you site is taking their info from ICBN.
i'm not fixated on this, just wondering in my spare time! lol |

| They follow both the ICBN (International Code of Botanical Nomenclature) and ICNCP (International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants). |

| thanks. i wish i understood all this naming better...and i wish i could navigate the ICBN site without feeling like a fool...lol
another question for you on the updated ICBN Vienna edition. when you search the plant index, do they only list changes made for that particular edition? |

| I'm not familiar with that. I know that the ICBN updates every six years, following an "international congress of botanists". |

| i think the "latest edition" is named for the place they meet. in 1999, it was called the St. Louis edition and now it's the Vienna edition...but what you're saying is probably that the list is only updates, not the entire plant world. |

| Yes, and they only provide guidelines for naming, rather than a strict set of rules. |
