Hi everyone,

I've just moved into a new house in Atlanta, GA (zone 7B) with mondo grass planted throughout most sections of the garden. The top parts are completely dead, resembling dried pine needles, and easily separate from the root systems. Is it possible that root rot caused the mondo grass to die, and if so, would it be best to pull everything out and plant a different type of ground cover? The garden is mostly full sun with some shady areas and the soil is slightly acidic.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

As far as I know mondo grass likes some shade, so I don't think it would do well in full sun in a hot summer climate like Georgia--I wonder if it fried in the sun and that's why it looks dead?

Hm, that's a good point! In addition, Atlanta had a lot of rain in the past few months, and I've read that mondo grass seems to do better in well-drained soil.

Your mondo likely boiled in the combination of rain and direct sun. It is a woodland grass from Japan and Korea. Here is a link with more info.
