I got off work too late last night to go to the craft store or thrift store to try and look for one of these, so since I work in a used record store I decided to try and make my own out of a junky old record! it worked pretty well but took me a little while, i put the record in the oven for a couple of minutes at 300 degrees, it heats up really fast so I took it out with an oven mit and cut as many slits as i could until i had to put it back in for another softening. I cut out the center with some kitchen shears when it was really soft, and cut out every other strip of vinyl to ensure some sort of spacing between the pegs. I placed the whole thing on a flat round casserole and shaped it to that and then used my hair dryer on high to bend the individual pegs to kind of round them out so the yarn wouldn't get stuck on them. I think i have about 30 pegs with one that's bent down to hold the end of my yarn which i affixed there with a little slip knot. It also is helpful in reminding me where I started!

I have never used a store bought loom but i imagine it would be about the same as this, I am slightly worried about the spacing of the pegs and that my creations might come out weird but its worth a try! I will update you on how my beanie turns out!

p.s. I've been lurking for a while and finally decided to join in the fun, you guys are so creative I am continuously astounded!

That's a great idea----wonder if it would be strong enough for making grapevine wreaths...? I always have trouble getting mine round enough, and it would be difficult to find anything more perfectly round and the right size than an LP!

Very clever! What are you making on your new knitting loom?

I am not very experienced with knitting but am really good at making one stitch scarves! my boyfriend requested i make him a beanie and the loom method looks to be the easiest way! I would like to make lots of beanies for myself too to keep my head warm while i ride my bike! I haven't much time to sit at home and play with this yet but hopefully i can get a few good hours in tomorrow to try and finish something.

imapigeon i have never attempted to make a grapevine wreath so I am not sure how its done. I don't think it would be too hard to keep it circular if you had the right device, it doesn't feel super strong but maybe if you didn't cut out the center of the record like i did it would add more stability? its certainly worth a try!
